LM2 tail light lens screws
« on: June 06, 2020, 09:03:30 AM »
Looking for a source for these screws.
I don't have the originals so can't use to compare and don't want to damage the plastic rear light housing.
Is there a generic replacement or are they specific?

I have a V50 in the shop right now, same taillight, and can measure and take a photo of those for you.

Measure 2.90 mm in diameter. Thread pitch is 1.0 mm.

I always put a little silicone on the lens screws since they can't be tightened a lot.  Keeping them from falling out.

Which according to Charlies measurement is about 1/8" , which is awfully close to 8 gauge .  Peter

I'd be tempted to replace them with 3mm stainless machine screws - allen or phillips. Run a tip into the area where they thread, then put a dab of silicone or super glue in the hole. It'd be an upgrade.

Thanks for all the info.
When I bought my LM2 and refurb'd it, these screws were rusted in solid. I had to drill the heads off to remove the lens.
What's left of them both is still in the housing and I have to stick the lens in place with silicone.
I've found a replacement reflector housing on ebay which doesn't have screws, so hopefully with this info I can find some.

Measure 2.90 mm in diameter. Thread pitch is 1.0 mm.

This is very close to an Imperial #4 wood screw 0.112"(2.85mm) with the Imperial wood screw having a slightly steeper pitch than was measured.  These are common in any hardware to test for fit

I would caution against tapping to a machine screw size.  The machine screw will have a finer pitch.  Once tapped to the new size, there would be little material left for any screw to bite

Who'd have thought these buggers would be so hard to come by.
So far a couple of hours searching the web and these are the only M3s I've found with a suitable head and a 1mm pitch.

Don'y really want to buy 100 though!

Nobody would know if it was an easy to get 1/8" coarse screw from your local hardware store .  Peter
It's threading into a plastic housing isn't it ?

3MM panhead screw 30MM long. My local hardware (True Value chain) store has a terrific fastener section. Length might be an issue. I'll look today.
