T3 Dashboard Options
« on: April 15, 2024, 03:00:23 PM »
I'm knee-deep in a total restoration and starting to look at the dash. The bike itself is going to be a little more custom: I've had the frame powder coated red, and I plan on swapping the gas tank to the V7 Sport tank.

The gauges I have are original and in pretty good shape. However, I'm trying to simplify and improve upon the plastic dash. MGCycle has this (https://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=276&products_id=2774)

but it only has four lights, whereas the stock one is five. I figure I can lose the "Generator" indicator? I have already ordered the stock wiring harness and that's ready to be installed, so I don't want to go too far from stock, but I think it will be okay to tape off the Generator wires.

Does anyone see any problems with this, or perhaps knows of a better way to implement something like this? What other options might there be? Perhaps drilling a fifth hole in the center of the dash from MGcycle?

Generator indicator lamp supplies current to the rotor to start the magnetic field to produce current. Burn out the bulb and the alternator won't work.

I'd dump Lo Beam to get back to 4 lamps.

I used that dash plate with Motogadget gauges and cups on my G5 build.  It fits and works well, but I ended up going back to the stock T3 gauges and mounts.  I thought they looked better. The idiot light lenses in the stock top plate are very fiddly.

Assuming the Bosch charging system is still being used. Easy enough to wire in a "bootstrap harness" then it won't matter what bulb, or even if there's no bulb.

With an EME 450 watt charging system, no bulb is necessary.

The bulb will tell you if the alternator is working.
The resistor will not.

This is such an elegant setup, it seems so obvious in retrospect!

I'm only used to old Hondas and none of mine ever had any indication of the charging system. I'll either add a fifth hole or lose the lo beam.

I really prefer the metal style. It will match the build I have planned. Y'all will see where it's going soon enough.

Are these the lenses that you used? They look pretty skookum https://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=276&products_id=2782

The resistor will not.

So keep the bulb (LED) and use the bootstrap harness!
