V85TT Mistral System -- Can of Worms?
« on: May 26, 2023, 04:38:03 PM »
Hey Guzzi folk.

I recently bought a 2022 V85TT. (Great bike)

I'm nearly done farkling, but I'm now eyeing a Mistral exhaust system, including headers/y-pipe as well as one of their slip-ons.
My goal would mainly be to make maintenance a touch easier (looks like a pain to drain the gearbox with that big cat in the way), drop some weight, and most important, get some better music coming from the bike.

For anyone who has done this, am I in for a can of worms if I replace the stock exhaust system? How bad is the decel popping? Am I gonna have to install a SAS delete kit or do the ECU remapping dance?

I have a 2022 and put the Arrow headers with an aftermarket exhaust. Runs and sounds great. Yes there is some decel popping. Not enough to bother me. I am also one of the few who did not notice any buffeting from the stock screen so I just kind of ride without focusing on the details. Just enjoy the ride and scenery. I am just waiting for the E5 version of Guzzidiag to get a Beetle map.

Thanks for the reply Caffeineo.

I think you have the right attitude. I decided to just order the system and I can always change it out if I don't like it and sell to recoup much of my money. I'll update this thread with my results. Now for the long wait...

I put a de-cat y-pipe on my 2020 and used the stock muffler. Sounds throatier and if a trooper checks the muffler they'll see it's OEM. The bike did pop on decel so I put the Miatral boost adapter in and rarely happens now. Found mine on ebay for 1/2 the cost of new.

I added the complete E5 Mistral (without CAT) system to mine.  The quality is first rate, which results a very easy install.   I'm very happy with it and the bike runs beautifully.  If there was a Beetle map I would certainly have that on the bike, but since that is not possible I bought the Mistral spoofer.  All good with no worms present.

Thanks for the assurance folks.

Dave, that is a great looking bike. Very clean. Can I ask how much louder than stock is the exhaust + exagon slip-on?

Yes, it's the Exagon E5.  I leave the db killer in.  The sound is pleasant.  Just a bit more volume than stock.  At highway speeds it can't be heard unless you give it a fistful.  I prefer a quiet bike for long distance.  Anyone buying this for loud pipes would be very disappointed.  Of course I could take the db killer out, as my loud pipe riding buddy desires, but for my preference its perfect with them in, and I am guessing that the fueling may not be as good with them out either.

That's great to hear Dave, thanks. I just want a bit more volume, but not to levels that would be irritating for everyday and touring use. Sounds like this will do the job perfectly!

If you want a bit more, this is perfect.  This system is very well made.  There should be no disappointments.  I recommend buying the Mistral VTwinboost module to go with it.  Not because I am a fan of spoofers, they are not ideal, but I must admit that with this module my bike runs very well.  I can detect no rough spots in the fueling.

I am one who never replaces stock exhaust. That is until I bought my V7III. THE mistral short pipes just go so well with the bike.

I had no plans to change the V85TT exhaust, but the heat off the cat is unbearable even with thick leather riding boots. If I do change it, the heat will be the reason.

I saw on GT that I think it was Mistral now has a deflector for the E5 V100 crossover. It's not on their website yet. Maybe they will come up with one for the v85.

I just installed a MIVVY-pipe to replace the cat and reused the OEM muffler. Not the sound of a full system but much cooler running, cheaper, and still sounds throatier than stock.

I haven't investigated yet, but I'm told the 2022 bikes have welded one piece systems that have to be dealt with.  Otherwise, I would do just what you did.

Yes. Mine's a 2020 Euro 4 with separate cat pipe. For the gen 2 Euro 5 models you have to get headers in addition to the Y-pipe and reinstall the O2 sensors.

I finally received my mistral system. Looking to install it this weekend and will report back on this thread.

One question for anyone with an E5 bike, though—Any advice on how to get to the lambda probe connectors? Looks like access is pretty tight next to the reg/rect unit. Looks like you might be able to detach the connector but it’s pretty stiff, don’t want to break it.

It's been awhile since I installed mine.  The instructions were pretty good.  It was quite easy, therefore the foggy memory.

Do you recall if you had to remove or loosen the R/R or lift the tank? I'm seeing conflicting info online and the shop manual is no help. I think the reality is I just need to lift the connectors up off its mounting bracket.

Funny how I'll tear down my G5 or T3 with no issues but a little electrical connector on a modern bike is causing me grief.

Got it installed. I did loosen the R/R to reach the lambda connector mounting post.

Very happy with the sound with the dB killer installed, and very happy to lose some weight. Not to mention easy access for gearbox oil changes.

Now just need to go on a long ride to see if there are any discernible performance changes.

Where did you all buy your systems?  I’m thinking I won’t get my V85TT back for a while so I may wait until spring to look into a system.
