Enigmatic is a great way to describe him.  I got to see him during the Ziggy Stardust tour.  My two favorite albums of his are " Man Who Sold The World"  and  "Ziggy Stardust"  they are on my regular playlist.  Personal favorite is "All The Madmen"  great description of how best to relate to our current world of "sanity".  I never listened with regularity to much of his music beyond those two albums but liked what I heard of it.
RIP Starman

There are few, if any, that I'd rather see than Bowie if I could go back in time. There are so many that can point to this one man as having placed the point on the map of their musical pursuits.

Probably not much left to do in the universe of modern rock that he hasn't pioneered.

In 1976, the Rochester, NY police busted David Bowie and Iggy Pop for possession of marijuana. Everybody should have such an edgy mug shot: http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/david-bowie-mug-shot_56941e6de4b05b3245da096c?utm_hp_ref=entertainment&ir=Entertainment&section=entertainment

My favourite would have to be the duet with Tina Turner singing, '"Tonight"

Enjoyed the film "Labyrinth" too.

Yup, we are getting old.

"Cat People" theme is intense, especially as it's used in the movie.   ...WITH GASOLINE

I couldn't name a favorite...there were just too many truly great songs. I do particularly enjoy Bowie's take on unrequited love in "Letter to Hermione", the rough urban vibe of "Ziggy Stardust", the folky "Janine", and his cover of the Pixies' "Cactus", but there are many more. David Bowie's body of work was no less than epic...

The Duke is gone. I too am feeling older today. I was a fan. He is one of the few artists that I still have on vinyl.

My Brother-in-law and a mate of his  got to "interview" him once in his Christchurch hotel room by pretending to be reporters for a fictitious magazine. They reckoned he caught on, but they had a nice chat anyway.

One of the local TV stations has a link to Bowie's first fan letter--it's interesting to read. You have to click on a link in this link to read it:

Bummer, that.

Another generation's Sinatra bows out.
What a class act he was, all in all. His ability to re-invent himself with regularity while avoiding the tarnish of "come-back", new & improved or clambering for renewed relevance was an interesting thing to behold.

Flawed versions of Bowie's "script"include Cher or Madonna - showing his chameleon gift was not so easily mimicked.
