It's not a Harley. Even at that, nephew Harley Rick bought a 34K CVO. When I asked him how he liked it, he said, "I wish I could say I loved it, but I don't. Now, I'm stuck with it because nobody will buy it.."

All the farkles in the world are worthless, unless you find a buyer that was planning on buying them. I know I'm not paying $12000 extra bucks for someone else's choices. Why not buy new, add what  you wish, and still pay less?

Some may remember a tarted-up California that was advertised here in Madison for the total price of its accessories, about $17,000. The bike itself was "free." It continued to be listed at that price for most of a year, don't know if it ever sold.

This latest one's owner has a big lesson coming.

That's why I can't figure out the world of Hot Rods.  I must admit to being a little prejudiced against them, since I hate to see a neat old car chopped up and used as the basis for an almost unusable custom, but that aside ....

I'll see people take a '32 Ford V8, or a '47 Hudson, or a '51 Mercury, and literally put $100,000 into it turning it into what looks to me like a carbon copy of a thousand other Hot Rods ... chopped, channelled, slammed, frenched, 350 crate engine, Nova front end, tons of chrome, metalflake paint etc etc and that's fine if that's what makes them happy.

But then they go to sell it, and the big selling point is "$100,000 of receipts for work done fully documented".

Why would someone pay that kind of money for someone ELSE'S dream?   Can anyone here explain it using their own experience?

They lack vision, want instant gratification and understand depreciation.  Takes years to get other people to build your ride to your specs, then it isn't worth what you have into it.

That's a fact Lannis. Back a few years ago I was going through a change in life crisis and sold my life insurance policy to build my dream car, a 40 Plymouth coupe with all mopar equipment. I put 18,000 bucks in that project. A short few years later I got in the needif cash and finally found a buyer willing to give me 9,500 for it. Never again will I be that ignorant and would tell anyone if you want a street rod fine one about 80-90% finished and just steal the darn thing from some fool:(

A  local guy I know bought a nice ,original 57 chevy pickup, for 10K, he took it to Phoenix to a high end hot rod builder to have it turned into a full on  turn key custom show truck.
He ended up putting a total of 120K in the truck. It was a stunner, with independent rear suspension, the whole chassis chromed out, air bags, high end  brakes, you name it that truck had it, along with a gorgeous old school flame paint job.
After a few years ,he got tired of trailering it to car shows all over the southwest, was afraid to drive it much, because it may get scratched, and took hours to clean underneath, etc.
When it came time to sell, he tried to get what he had in it for a year+, he even put it in Barrett Jacksons auction, one time in Scottsdale, still didnt sell.
He kept lowering the price , for a couple of years ,listed it in all the hot rod sites, and finally was able to "get out from under it" for about $75K !
He was without a toy for a while, but now I hear he is building a 68 chevelle, at the same place up in Phoenix!
Go Figgure....

I'm gonna speak from the world of "Motorcycle hotrods"... the circle I hang out in builds garage customs. Now, different mindset from the "Boyd Coddington" type build... they're not building $50,000 bikes, and *most* of them don't cut up decent examples of classics (though some do... sadly) they're usually starting from frankenbikes and beat up, dirt cheap garage finds. Some of their builds are beautiful bikes, others are... unique. I do know some car guys... they tend to do the same thing... buy old rustbuckets and get them up and running and looking cool, but they don't tend to cut up good quality examples.

Some people... want the chopper, want the custom, but can't or won't do it themselves. So they're willing to pay for it.

The builders (that I am speaking of), for the most part, if they do sell them, they usually only make back what they put into them (and it sure as hell isn't a ton... but they do want to cover the cost of the custom paint, and get some sort of return for hours spent)… but that usually tops out at about $6000 range.

As for the shop-built custom "chopper" at outrageous prices? I have zero idea why they sell for that. I guess because buying premade parts from guys that buy premade parts tends to add up over time, and everyone wants to make a profit? However... I think getting paid for one's sweat is fair...

I agree with you though... "custom" says "this is me", to me. Not "this was someone else, but I think it looks cool".

There are, as always, exceptions but it's usually the case that full circle, bone stock is worth the most.

Back in the day, I built a 39 Chevy business coupe, modified so the two boys would have a place to sit in the back. Fully articulated seats. Lowered, modern front end, Ford 9 inch rear, 350 that I eventually made into a 383 small block. Won some awards. Drove it as our daily driver for 3 years, then sold it to put the kids through Vincennes.

I was in business for a while with some guys who did classic and race car restorations.  We turned down more cars than we accepted.  I can recall the guy who ran the shop telling a potential customer, "You'd save money  if you just gave that car away."  He was right ...

$10,000 to $12,000 depreciation per year?  Not much different from a Mercedes, Bentley, etc...

Pocket change...  (for a guy with $120k to spend on a four-wheeled toy).

$1500 wrap job?  WTF?, over....

I asked a friend to ask her friend (who does vinyl wraps) for a rough estimate in wrapping my buddies' Versys (he hated the orange colour)… he came back with a price just shy of $1000 CDN. Said that wrapping bikes is a PITA due to tight bends and angles, and small surfaces. Could have been full of it, I dunno anything about the topic, really. Just throwing it out there. Maybe $1500 isn't so far off base?

A couple years ago my line trimmer needed a new carburetor.   I called the local place and they wanted $85 for it.  I went online and ordered the exact same carburetor direct from Hong Kong for $10 delivered.  Cut out the exporter, importer, wholesaler, distributor, and retailer who all add onto the price for passing the part through.

There are vendors on Amazon and other sites that never touch the product they are selling.  It gets drop shipped from the manufacturer or distributor when you complete your order.

In today's global environment it is kinda crazy that these types of supply chains still exist.

There are, as always, exceptions but it's usually the case that full circle, bone stock is worth the most.

Main reason, I keep the fleet stock or pretty close to it.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉

So full sticker for a second hand helmet? There are places in the world you are not legal allowed to resell a helmet once its been used.

If it's a dealer selling it, the helmet may indeed be brand new.

Still, lunacy.
