V7 Stone Rear Brake Pedal Lever - Bend it?
« on: July 23, 2021, 06:14:32 AM »
Hi, all! My 2015 V7 Stone came to me with adjustable foot pedals like these:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/232576531481?epid=2211718997&hash=item3626a43c19:g:G24AAOxyo4lRlCHD

You can adjust them to different positions and I think I have found a good spot for my feet. My issue is the rear brake lever - I have to really concentrate on moving the ball of my foot inboard to depress the rear brake. I have a few things going against me; 1) I typically ride cruiser style bikes and my 'normal' position is to have my knees away from the tank. This rotates my feet out. 2) My right foot naturally is rotated out. If I stand straight my right foot sticks more 'out' than my left.

Anyways, looking through the old posts it looks like I'm not alone in wanting a longer rear brake lever with most people looking to just lengthen the stock arm. I have started to do that, but I think it's going to look kinda ghetto with a 2" long brake arm sticking out the side of my bike. My thought is to take the lever (this part below) and bend it a bit so it comes away from the engine more. This is the part I'm thinking about bending in two spots:

Has anyone tried this? Do you think I have a chance or will I just end up breaking it if I try to bend it?

(Or should I just shut up and buy the MG extended peg):

Bending a steel brake lever should be pretty straight forward.  Tweaking the levers and foot pegs to suit your riding is always a good thing.  I have made more shifters than brake levers over the years.  Surprisingly brake levers on enduros get bent quite often and rarely do they break. Usually I can bend them back without heat and they are good until the next time.

Thanks, Mike! I was worried it might 'shatter' as the finish makes it look like a cast part (to my ignorant and metalurgically untrained eye!). I think I'll give it a try, unless someone warns me that they have broken their lever at some point.

I recommend removing it first so you aren't putting a lot of pressure on the moving parts.  Or get some fuel tank pads and learn to squeeze the tank with your knees.  Using your knees against the tank to help hold up your torso makes you a lot lighter on the hand controls which in turn provides a more stable ride.

Remove it, Heat it, Bend it ...

The back brake isn't really for stopping anyway, just use the front!

The rear brake does contribute some to stopping the bike, and under normal riding isn't really necessary, but according to every riding instructor I have been taught by or talked with, you should always apply some rear brake so you don't end up stomping on it in a panic situation.

I took the lever off. It is not steel, it's really light so I think it's aluminum. I put it in a vice thinking it would bend like a wet noodle... my full force and I couldn't get it to bend in the least bit. I'm now 99% sure it's cast aluminum and will crack and crumble instead of bending.

So I used a longer bolt, several layers of electrical tape, and then three layers of rather tough shrink wrap (the stuff for electrical work, not syran wrap, LOL!) that I have and at least now I have a longer arm. I made it about an inch longer and it's a ton better for my foot.

We're talking about the V7, not a sport bike with dual front disks.  LOL!
