Webshots?
« on: March 08, 2015, 11:26:03 PM »
I have been out of touch more than I thought, it seems.  Just went to Webshots to upload an image for inclusion here and cannot find the log in button, or anything I recognize.  Looks like it's only a place to obtain 'high definition images for screen savers, or sumpin.

Don't start me !

Oh OK.

I had all (well heaps of) my pics on Webshots.

Then they took a unilateral decision and 'optimized' the site for mobile devices.  Also known as making it ruibbish for everything else.
It killed ALL the links I had in various forums and so on.  Then they said I had to pay if I wanted to continue using it - didn't even get time to download some of the pics etc.

Long story short - Photobucket is my place of choice now for most of my photos.
(I do have a flickr account which I just use with photography forums).

Don't rely on online storage.

Right, but for photos linked to forum posts and other places on the web, they're handy.  Not to archive photos, but as a photo server for a few particular photos.

You have to pay for it, but it's a really nice site.

Sure, I use it all of the time for temporary use. I just don't rely on it.

I have folders on my computer for all my photos.

No way I'd delete photos on my computer after uploading them to my hosting site.

In my instance I had a major computer meltdown where the HDD destroyed itself so I went to get itfrom the online site and...nnnnooooooo.

Unhappy.

But yes, always keep backups.

The thing that annoyed me the most was that all of the posts I'd made with pics to numerous forums - suddenly didn't have the photos anymore.  Kind of spoils trip reports and build threads....

Online storage sucks.  I keep two backups plus the original, for pics and critical files it is three backups.  NONE are online.  Two are not connected to the computer or internet except for making the backups.  One is in a different location in case of fire.

A point I argue every time the lure of the "cloud storage" siren temptress raises her head in meetings here about how to store our increasing media inventory.

IMO, the cloud conceals many rocks on which to crash at the least opportune time.

It's good to be an old Luddite.  (most of the time)

Recently my "calendar" crashed on my Mac OS X Mavs. Completely cleaned itself out. 6 years of business data/contacts on the calendar.  I had an external hard drive and tried to restore. Nothing nada. Calendar refused to accept the data. I called Apple and tried it online with the top supervisor tech online via screen sharing. He said he never saw such a thing before. I had to up load to them a 40 MB data file. They were going to figure out what went wrong. The guy was "determined" to figure it out.
About 30 minutes after uploading the file to them the calendar accepted the restore and just started working again. Strangest thing. But there is nothing like a good old fashion hard drive to keep everything safe. Call me a Luddite but no cloud necessary here.

Good information that... Figured out the trouble: I had not deleted the old Webshots link and zoomed right by Photobucket without noticing it.

Yah, I bought a 1TB external and have created a few logical drives on that for different sorts of files.  Helps me find the gadget I am seeking a little more easily than a long tree on one drive.  No use for "the Cloud".  When I shut down at the end of a session the computer is turned fully off so it's a little harder for a hacker (for example) to get in and look around.

Say, a couple of days ago I made a second purchase from a retailer who say they do not store any customer credit card info.  Surprise, my card info popped up when I went to checkout!  Sent them a note and asked, the service agent replied the info is saved in my cookie for their site.  She suggested if it was a concern, I could delete the cookie files.  I suppose it is stored there because the site's instructions stuff it in there but it is a place I had not thought of when cleaning personal info out of the computer.
