T3 -- fitting 10mm tappet lock nuts
« on: April 21, 2019, 08:15:28 AM »
Can I fit 10mm-hex nuts on my T3's tappet adjuster screws without creating a problem? I recall the nuts are 11mm.

With 10mm nuts I could use this Motion Pro tappet adjustment tool (they don't offer an 11mm version):

https://www.motionpro.com/product/08-0586

Using a different version for my Buccaneer 250 was a great help last night, and made me think one would be nice for the T3 (and also for my Griso 1100, which I recall has 10mm adjusters). That big knob -- along with the 12-point wrench that can easily be repositioned while the knob is held in place -- makes fine-tuning the gap a breeze.

Also, does anyone know the thread size of the T3's tappet screws?

Seems plausible.

I drop a box end wrench over the adjuster nut then clamp a tiny vice grip to the flats on the adjuster stud and with hand hold the vice grip while I turn the box end wrench. Not as elegant as the proper tool but it works for me.

This is how I have always done it as well.

Size on tappet studs is 8x1mm. Guzzi went from a 13mm nut to  a lighter 11mm nut about T3 era. If that became a 10mm nut it would leave  only 1 mm of metal thickness. Unless it was made of some type of unobtanium ($$$/ Guzzi content) it would be weak IMHO.

Excellent points. I suppose then that the 10mm hex nuts on the Griso 1100 are mating with a smaller adjuster, maybe 6mm?

(That is, if I am right that those are 10mm nuts.)

Never mind! I see from MG Cycle's listings that I am wrong, and that my Griso shares the same 11mm nuts as my T3.

Thanks, Guzzista.

Silly me.

I cut a groove in a 3/8" or so allen wrench (with a Dremel) to turn the adjuster. You can use it with a box end wrench on the nut.

Even better is a round shank screwdriver, cut it shorter, and cut the grove in it... give you a nice handle to hold, turn.  I made one up years ago for a old car I had back in the day. Cant even remember why through the fog of time, but it worked well. its kinda like a slightly bigger tire valve core remover.

Those are three excellent suggestions. I've used a needle-nose Vise Grip. But I'll either modify an Allen wrench or a round-shank screwdriver after I take another look at the actual motor.

Those Motion Pro tools are indispensable for the little Buccaneer, but Guzzis are a whole different story.

Thanks to all.

I check the rocker clearance on my T3 once in a blue moon (maybe every 10K miles) just out of guilt. Has a bit over 90K miles so far (70K on Ghilardoni Cylinders and valve rebuild by Memphis Motor Works). Maybe every 20K miles I might have to touch up an exhaust valve by 0.001". For adjustmen's that infrequent ordinary wrenches prove quite sufficient.

Found a tool similar to Motion Pro, but made for 11mm Guzzi tappet adjustment nuts. No affiliation

Thanks for that! I found it too, on another web page that I decided looked fishy. But this one seems OK.

I use a baby (3" long) metric adjustable end wrench to hold the adjuster.
