where no guzzi has gone before...
« on: June 23, 2021, 10:04:09 AM »
.....or the story of the flying goosi! so courtesy of craigslist and $4700 I am now the new owner of a 2007 california vintage! the problem was that i live in Nome alaska and the bike is in Fairbanks, 500 or so miles away. there are no roads to Nome, we live on the bering sea coast closer to Russia than any other major city, everything here is either barged, flown in or comes by dog team :whip2:. buying a bike sight unseen is nerve wracking enough but then trusting a local carrier who then trucked it to anchorage (370mi.) and then put it on a a cargo transport (to the tune of $1100) to Nome had me anxious for weeks.
As it turns out the damage was minimal, in that they knocked the RH mirror off. the cargo mgr. decided to delay my shipping and replace the mirror...4 weeks from Italy :undecided:. when I called to see what the holdup was they put it on the plane the next day and will send along the mirror later.
Here is the kicker: there are a few harley and BMW owners here and even a ducati, but there has NEVER been a Moto Guzzi of any type anywhere in western Alaska that I am aware of, this is a true first: N64.5 W165.5 and a Cal-Vin at that...boldly going where no guzzi has gone before I have only put about 60mi. on it so far and it has been great. there are some nigling issues still to work out. nothing this forum and some patience cant work out.
its not the end of the world...but you can see it from here!

I wondered about that, too, as what I knew about Nome would have fit into a thimble (from a Monopoly game)!.

Naturally, to avoid doing tasks on "Her List" I just spent some time looking maps and pix of the area.

After all of that, I am impressed with your "only put about 60mi. on it so far."

Oh, congrats and welcome.  The CalVin is a fine model of the marque.

Unfortunately the riding season up there is much longer than it used to be.

We have 3 state roads here, all gravel 73mi. northwest to Teller, 75mi. north to Kugarok and 75mi. southeast to Council, just imagine the Danali national park road only no busses and you can stop off the road anywhere. also I have a subsistance camp @ mi41 on Kugarok hwy. near salmon lake above the pilgrim river.
riding season here is mid june( when the roads get open free of snow) till about october. after that it gets too cold and we wait for enough snow to pull out the snowmachines, which i have 3; two yamaha bravos and a ski-doo rev 600.

Guess I will no longer complain about my coastal New Hampshire riding season.

Being so close to the Bering Strait.

That is so cool...
