Lil' Guzzi on the tundra...
« on: August 05, 2021, 05:19:30 AM »
After the wettest July in 50 years for the Seward peninsula the clouds parted and we hit 70f. On the ther-hot-o- meter today...heatwave! Clouds away time to play! Have not had much chance to go ride since I got the Guzzi so off to fish camp about 40 mi. North of Nome.

And one of my little cabana on a bluff overlooking the Pilgrim river

 I had been warned by the p.o. of a leak @ the hub but this is the first time it happened, but only after stopping. Could this just be from the heat? I checked fluid level and is still full. Should I be worried about. This or wait till I need to replace the tire?

Also lost a cap nut from left rear blinker, no big deal but have been having some intermittent blinker failure.
Got in a snooze and back to the graveyard shift. More rain on the way!

Epic location! The tundra is very interesting. If you leave the Guzzi idling on the kickstand, will the bike gradually sink beneath the thawed permafrost?

 Ok, fist pic was north, second west and this one is South. Was not going to post because of sun glare taken @ Solar noon (about 3pm). You can just see the river in the background behind trailer running r-l. Sorry no pic east.
The area there is glacial gravel(river bench)about a mile east of salmon lake 64.93°N 164.94°W , mostly hard not frozen almost got stuck in truck going through a soft spot in spring though. Camp is about 300 yards off the highway. Can't see it in pics.

Re the rear end leak.
Pull the level plug out and check for water in the oil;
You don't happen to ride through any streams do you, sudden cooling can cause it to suck in water, you would want to add a vent hose.
Any water leaking into the drive shaft area will also end up in the rear end, there is no seal back there.

Looks like a nice Vintage, only one I've seen in the state. How did it get there?

I was on a month long road trip in June so missed your post. Glad you revisited so I could catch up! Always wondered about your road system. It's bigger than I thought. Way more than my 2 previous homes in Sitka and Kodiak.

at least you had pavement there! all gravel here! a real PITA after such bad weather when the graders go through and leave nothing but loose rock on top. dry now but too rough to go anywhere till some of the top crust goes away. the teller road is notorious for sharp rock. most people go to 10 ply tires around here on there trucks. got two flats in one week on my chevy 2 years ago and spent $1400 on a set of cooper discoverer at3 and have not had a flat since.
council road seems to get better maintenance as it is a rock haul road to the quarry at cape nome and the local rich folk have thier summer homes in council on the niukluk river.
the kougarok (taylor hwy.) road gets maintained till mi. 78 or so but i hear new culverts are being put in farther up that have washed out the road there for years. Taylor is an old mining town very close within the Bering straits national preserve and previous administrations have been favoring "road-less" policy that keeps funding to a minimum there, similar to logging road expansions in SE Alaska.
but once winter comes its all open country here, I put way more miles on my snow machines than i do on a road bike!
