So after much checking, probing , steering, we have come to the conclusion that my ECU is fried some how, I'll know for sure tomorrow when we plug it into another 98. Does anyone repair them?

Is the 98 a 15M? You have lots of choices if it is. Ducati/Aprillia use them. 15M can be found inexpensively. MPH in Houston has a few 15M's .

It's a P8 in a 98. When mine was put in a customers bike. I got a MyECU P8 from Cliff.

You can run it open or closed loop. The best ECU in my opinion.

The Safety Diode i believe, I have fixed a couple of those., it doesn't even need to be inside the ECU, it can be outside on the relay.
It's purpose is to protect the ECU if you accidentally put the battery in backwards it grounds the other side of the ECU relay

Steven C, if the ECU relay is not picking up of course check your battery is in right way around first (it will still crank)
~~I don't know how it gets blown~~ electricians don't confess when they screw up but I blew mine also, any small signal diode will do, say 1 Amp with the striped end to chassis.

It's the diode shown at the top of this sketch in the dashed box, it will work just as well outside on the Y/R wire to chassis.

I found the RY wire coming out of the ECU relay ,so is this external diode located inside the harness? Just asking before I start cutting up the cover.

So I take it from your question your ECU relay is not picking up?

The diode can be anywhere, the relay coil only draws 100 milliamps so the diode is not stressed (won't heat up)
Perhaps the original RY wire soldered to diode, diode band end soldered to a short wire connected to a chassis screw and cover the diode with a piece of heat shrink.
As I said the diode is to make sure ECU relay doesn't pick up if the battery is in backwards.
The later bikes like VII Sport with the 15M ECU have the diode outside in the loom somewhere.

BTW I made the EV Wiring Sketch to carry under the side cover as a cheat sheet, with a test light you should be able to check on most important stuff from there
