When is it a heart vs. a head decision?!
« on: December 03, 2021, 10:22:02 AM »
Ok so my M.I.L. calls me fickle, fair dinkem as long as it’s not about women since I married her daughter..... :cheesy:

But when it comes to bikes, I AM GUILTY AS CHARGED!

So my trusty brain trust, when, if any time, do you decide with your heart as in ooh, eye candy I gotta have that new V100 vs. well I’ve researched the snot outta these 3 bikes and have decided on XXXXX?!

I do know that you must ride a bike quite a lot in order to really get to know it. A 10 minute test ride only tells me if I really hate it. (rare)

Anyway, whaddya think!
What brain vs. heart decisions have served you best?

I know that using both is ideal for sure but sometimes......well you know.

For me it's heart.  I'll put up with a lot of crap if I love the bike.  ( I ride a Guzzi not a Honda!  'Nuff said)

I'm a mess.

I research the shit out of them and have often stupidly made the decision with my brain. And when that happens I'm almost always wrong.

Other times I research the shit out of them, then ignore my head and follow my (ooops mean to type) HEART. And when that happens I'm almost always right.

Yet I persist in researching the snot out of them.

I did this with my Anni. She was sight unseen, and I'd never ridden a Guzzi before she was delivered. The heart wants what the heart wants.

+1.  One of the best motorcycle decisions I ever did was buying a V7 from Hamlin sight unseen and having never been on a Guzzi.  It was a Bonneville replacement and the end result has been spectacular.

My first Guzzi was from the heart.
Also sight unseen and from 200 miles away.
Now I’m on my 4th 10 years later.
My second Guzzi, the Calvin was also from out of state and the heart made the decision.
However my advice would be listen to both head and heart on any major decision and let the one that makes the best pro and con arguments prevail.

It’s always a heart decision. The head tells me that motorcycles are life threatening moneypits. Go with your heart and a good long test ride.

If the heart wants it bad enough, it will always convince the head.

If the head wins out anyway, the heart will never let the head hear the end of it.

Get what you want and you'll never be disappointed.

If you can't have an affair with the bike it's not worth riding, affairs are purely a matter of the heart - thinking with your head is just back-up - thinking with the wrong head is lethal... regardless of what it's about!

Yep.  Endlessly entertaining discussions on other boards about the "specs" on the new Mandello and all the bench racing.  Effing hysterical.
As if a Guzzi was about specs.............. ..............

If you buy with your heart and things go a bit wrong, you’ll create excuses and overcome...(like when your new puppy wees on the carpet because he feels like he’s found a home...)

If you buy with your head and things go a bit wrong, you’ll wonder why yours is the only one that ever broke down, you’ll hate it forever.
(Like your brand new Honda 500, that keeps failing and you’re told they’re, “hard to get parts for”...!)

A bike is an expensive indulgence that is there to serve your emotions and emotions are driven by the heart.
Our needs are best driven by our heads and are devoid of emotion, no one “needs” a motorbike in the recreational world.
The bike is there to serve your heart, obey that..(then look at the quote under Guzzi Gal’s signature....

Head decision for me. My choices fit the type of riding and the terrain I want to ride in. That's why I have a vintage sport bike for corner carving and a dual sport for the more remote areas (which is really my favorite)

Hmm, on that basis, for where I live (German Black Forest) I need to build a Maico 680 2st motor into a 125 frame!

Start with heart as motorcycles (for most of us) are about passion and joy. Let some logic dictate selection based on your needs and abilities but in the end, who wants to ride a dull bike? I was getting a little down on MG and went with an F800GS. Very efficient and capable but it just didn't scratch my itch - no soul in that bike. Sold that for a Griso 1200SE and mamma mia, that was one spicy meatball!

I am exactly like Kevin.  I’ll research the crap out of them no matter what, yet the heart decisions are always better.   The few bikes I’ve really disliked or regretted were all “head” bikes.

Choosing bike is like choosing girlfriend. You have the sexy, wild and fun girl vs. a nice, educated, economical stable girl from church. The girl from church is probably the safest bet, but your heart says the wild and fun is the way to go.
