The PNW loses a good one. Bon Voyage, Gary Steele
« on: February 17, 2022, 11:51:42 AM »
We lost a great one this week to lung cancer.
Gary was the real thing. Smart and knowledgeable, great to travel with. Gary came to Cedarvale with me twice, had been to the Nebraska rallies at Harlen Lake (?) and MoKan more than once. A regular at WA, OR, NV and NorCal events.
He was a lifetime sawmill worker who was good to have around if mechanical trouble came calling.
We are going to miss him a bunch.

Was this person one of the organizers of the 2018 MGNOC National in John Day, OR? If so, they put on a perfect MG rally!

Was this your buddy Gary that we met at Cedar Vale?  Had some nice chats with him while there...

He was on the rally staff. You might have bought a t-shirt from him.

We remember Gary from the Nebraska Rallies over the years. Steve Lingg started the event and my wife and I took it over when Steve passed. Gary was one of the good ones indeed. Sorry to hear of his passing. Our thoughts are with his family.

MotoG5, Gary had strong ties to Nebraska. His parents met and wed while planting trees for the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey; part of a PWA project, I think.
We stopped off a few years ago to visit a cousin who has a ten thousand acre ranch between Thedford and Valentine. That is some empty country.

Yes it is. I live in a small town just outside of Omaha and travel out to Alliance several times a year for long range rifle matches. It is an area where having 1000yd shooting events is no problem.

I'm so sorry to hear about this.  I had the pleasure to ride with Gary a few times on the west coast.  Great guy, could make anyone feel welcome.

As usual I’m late in posting.
A Gary Story…
12-15 years ago I was attending the Dayton Nevada campout for the first time. As a borderline insomniac (with an old man’s prostate) and a smoker I got up to pee in the middle of the night/morning. After I did my business I was sitting in the pavilion having a smoke when I saw a floating glowing ember in the shadows. Waved the ember over and out of the dark appeared Gary. Thus started a wee morning tradition every September. We would get up in the crazy early am (4-5) Saturday and Sunday mornings drink a pot of coffee, smoke too many cigarettes and talk for hours. Too old geezers chatting over coffee in the quiet predawn hours. Then when others started to stir around 6-7 we would both head back to our respective tents for a short nap of an hour or less. This was our routine for years. Last weekend was the NV campout…got up at 4 and went to the head…at the pavilion was waiting for the coffee to brew…and a shocking profound sense of loss hit me. No more quiet coffee chats in the desert darkness. I knew of his passing and was sad that we wouldn’t have another session. But standing alone in the dark listening to the percolator gurgling I realized how much I had enjoyed and looked forward to our odd tradition. Strange how important 4 or 5 hours of contact once a year can become. Even if we are unaware of it until it’s lost!
Godspeed Gary. I’ll make a fresh pot of Joe for our next meeting.
