Looks like it is in Genus Amanita.  Need to see a pic of the gills, and the stem.  Dig it out carefully with a pocket knife being careful to not damage the subterranean parts of the stem. That will help with identification.

I can't find my big mushroom book, and it's not in the little book.  I've discovered that if a north American mushroom isn't in my little book, it's probably not an edible.  In any case, 'shrooms are so easily misidentified that there are methods of observing and sporing samples that are used together to determine what you've got.

My knee-jerk reaction is that this is in the amanita family.  It has the typical striated lid, and perhaps the vestige of a nipple on top that would have been more pronounced a few hours earlier.  It appears to have a hollow. hairy stalk.  If we could see the underneath for how the sporing gills (this is a gill-type) attach (or don't) to the stem and check for a veil, we could be more definite.  If we had a spore sample for color and pattern we could get precise.

What the sample doesn't have that west coast amanitas often feature is a spotted top with a damp secretion.  This is why an ID book and local knowledge is important if you want to be a mushroom picker -- regional differences in the appearance of a 'shroom can be confusing and deadly.

To properly 'see' a mushroom you need to look at all the qualities -- does it have gills or sponge-type sporaphores? Are the sporing parts attached or detached from the stem?  Is the stem solid or hollow?  is the stem 'hairy'?  Does it have a hymen or 'veil', and if so, is it attached to the stem?  Does it secrete anything?  Have animals been eating it?

Those properties/canopy color/spore test help id a mushroom.  BUT . . .  even if a 'shroom is 'edible' it can still give you a reaction.  ALL mushrooms are toxic.  An edible that you find yummy might put your tablemates in the hospital.  It depends on the person.  Toxins may or may not be life threatening.  Some just mess with your metabolism or brain.  Others can suppress your autonomic nervous system or make histamines go nuts.

So yes, mushrooms are a lot like cheap beer.   :D

No problem RK.  Another way to identify them is by taste, but I wasn't going to suggest that to him  :D ;D

It's a giant puff.  Looks like a dinner roll and has a hard, dry skin.  That one is old and is being attacked by other fungi -- some sort of penicillin.  If you tap it it will sound like a drum.  If you step on it (our favorite thing to do as kids), it pops and releases a smoky cloud of spores that keep whisping out for a minute after you remove your foot.  We usually found them under the canopy of a yellow oak.  Never under a conifer.

Comparing the pics to the guide you provided -- p4, fairy Ring Mushroom is more similar.  This sample has unattached gills and no veil (ring) on the stem, which makes me doubt that it's an amanita.  Now that I've seen the underside, I'd go with either a common fairy ring variation or capitulate to one of the zillion varieties simply called 'little brownies'.  These are a huge group of poisonous/benign 'shrooms that can really only be sorted by spore sample.  Not recommended picking unless you're very sure of what you've got.  Some LB's are so toxic that the leaking spores from a single misidentified sample can contaminate a shopping bag's worth of the good stuff.  Others taste just like buttered tofu (maybe tastier than the comparison sounds).  Be careful!

Don't confuse the little brownies with the gilled agaricus, or common meadow mushrooms.  The agaricus family includes almost all of the 'straw' 'white' and 'portabella' - type 'shrooms commonly sold at supermarkets.

1)  -- quite possible, except they look 'dry' by comparison.  Could be different points of maturity, or different weather conditions.

2) -- stem is wrong.

3) -- stem is wrong.

4) -- also a good possible -- gills and stem especially similar.

Here's an interesting discussion of how to do a mushroom ID from one of the above links:

http://americanmushrooms.com/id.htm

What all this should be telling us is that mushroom ID can be confusing and complicated.  If you're not sure of what you're looking at, leave it alone.  If it interests you, your regional cow college's extension program or community college system probably offers a hands-on mushrooming class.  They'll take you through the basics and out into the field for some gathering and ID of the local variants.  I always try to find that class when I move to a new region so's I can tell the players apart when I'm in the woods*.  Nothing is nicer than a late dinner of grouse with mushrooms, berries, and wild onions, all  harvested with the help of a good dog** and cooked fresh.   ;-T

* also a good way to meet hippie chicks, which seemed important to me at one time.

** more reliable than a hippie chick, better at finding mushrooms, and enjoys hunting grouse.  Also sticks around after the pot is gone.

Best use of mushrooms:
Elk steak seared on a grill
Saute red & green peppers, sweet onion, red onions in olive oil
While sauteing put the elk steak in with them
Add moral mushrooms
Steam wild rice
Whip up a hollendaise sauce
take some of the hollendaise sauce add tarragon to make a Bearnaise sauce
Saute asparagus in Worcester and sea/kosher salt
Plate the wild rice
place the steak on the wild rice
spoon the saute vegetables around the steak
pour hollendaise sauce over the steak
place the asparagus spears cross wise on top of the steak
drizzle the Bearnaise over the spears and lightly over the steak
Pour a glass of a good Cabernet Sauvignon

enjoy!!

Back in the 1960's, when I was a kid (about 6 or 7), I would go with my Italian grandfather to look for mushrooms. I remember him finding a bunch growing under a freeway overpass. He would drop a silver quarter into the pot with the mushrooms. If the quarter turned black the mushrooms were not good for eating. DON"T try this at home. Snopes says this technique does not work and eating poisonous mushrooms can be fatal. Information in this post disclosed for historical purposes, only.  ;D

When Dorcia and I were first married, I took her mushroom hunting. Since she's OCD  ;D she's a *great* mushroom dawg.  ;D We had A nice mess of morells, that I cleaned, dusted, and fried in butter. She wasn't too sure about eating one, until she tried them.

Could be fairy ring, I guess.  In my mushroom ID class, we used high powered microscopes and stains, looking at stuff like spore characteristics.  Spore color can be a diagnostic - put the cap on a piece of paper for a while, and it will make a nice spore print - usually brown, though.

But whatever this is, it seems like a fair bet that it doesn't matter - edible or not, there isn't much food in it anyway, and it sure isn't a magic mushroom.

Now I believe the puffball would have been good eating if it had been discovered earlier, when it was white all the way through.

Morels are a good deal, easy enough to ID and very good eating.  It's probably worth a look at Verpa and Gyromitra if you're new to this stuff.  I've eaten them - actually my mushroom prof cooked us up a mess of Gyromitra - and I wouldn't be worried about it in North America, but they're not as unambiguously safe as morels, and look vaguely similar, esp. Verpa.

Another common and easily identified eater is shaggy mane, if you get them before they start turning to black goo.  Delicate, mild flavor.

I always thought a mushroom was behind the high school stage where you made out with a hot cheerleader.

Looks like it is going to be a long winter.

Here in Indiana, dry land fishing gets into full swing every spring.  It turn into some fierce competition. Everyone has a secret place and you never share it with anyone.
