Title: V7 Speedo Issue
Post by: spowell on May 05, 2018, 11:51:21 AM
Peculiar issue...speedo now reads double actual speed on the first ride of the season. 2014 V7R. History:

1. Replaced both tires. I did remove the rear rotor before giving the wheels to my tire guy.
2. Put rear rotor and both wheels back on.
3. First ride - speedo reads double. Pulled battery. Went on another ride. Speedo reading the same.
4. Replaced the speedo sensor and reseated the connector loom on the back of the gauges.
5. Second ride - speedo still reads double

Not sure what else to check. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I think somehow you may have extra targets at the speed pickup.

That's what it seems like. I thought maybe that the wheel and rotor bolts are now too close to the sensor.  But I can't imagine how that could be possible.

Can you post a picture of the wheel at the sensor.

Let me know if another angle would be helpful.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at but it seems to me the pickup is close to the axel.
Try moving it further away, it might be getting a double pulse from the cup in the bolt head, moving it back will make it less sensitive.

It does seem close, but the sensor fits into a specific slot on rear caliper hanger and there is really no other way to position it.  I actually took the wheel off again today and put everything back hoping something was slightly out of alignment. But no luck...still reading double.

Thanks for taking a look though.

Does your Racer have ABS?

Well, it DOES solve the issue of folks saying the V7R is not fast! :boozing:

No, the U.S. 14's don't have ABS.

Very true. I can easily hit an indicated 140mph.

If anyone is in their garage today, can you measure the gap between the sensor and the rotor bolts and the size of the horizontal gap between the rear hub and final drive. Would happily paypal over money for a 6-pack.

Just want to rule out anything on the rear of the bike as the source of the issue.  Thanks

I don't have a mic handy, but eyeballing my '14 speedo sensor & rotor, it looks the same as your photos, i.e. only a few mm gap between the sensor and bolt heads.

Q for you: Were any of the brake rotor bolts replaced? I can see 4 of them in the photos, but if any were replaced with something other than stock, that could possibly be confusing the computer.

Is it possible the wheel has moved in relation to where it was?
I can't help but wonder if you are getting a double pulse from the dish in the bolt head.
Did you re-use the same bolts?
Typically that type of sensor works by having a coil of wire wound over a magnet, as the bolt heads pass they
disturb the field which creates a pulse in the coil.

You may be able to reduce the sensitivity with some thin steel, perhaps stick some steel washers in the depression as a test.

Thanks for taking a look. And I didn't replace any of the bolts. I had the same thought as well because I also had the rear fender off at the time and maybe I accidentally picked up a different bolt. But all six rotor bolts look the same to me.

Not sure if the wheel moved, but I don't see how it could move horizontally along the axle towards the sensor with the spacer and caliper bracket on the left side in place.  Might be possible going the other way by compressing the cush rubbers more.

Yes, and I used the same bolts. I had the thought that maybe some were different and need to be arranged a certain way on the rotor, but they all look the same to me.

I'm beginning to think the problem is with the front of the bike, as in the speedo itself.  Though, I'm not sure how to test that theory.

Is it possible you have switched the dash inadvertently from M/H to Km/H
80 Km/h = 50 M/h  not quite double

Don't think I could have accidentally changed it. I've never used any of the buttons on the dash.  And I wasn't aware that you could do that with the 2014's gauge cluster. I'll have to check the owner's manual.
