Yesterday's Guzzi memory
« on: May 22, 2018, 02:28:13 PM »

Out for a ride yesterday everything was going fine, stopped at cycle gear to see what was new ,came out to leave no lights not start . The only thing that worked was the emergency flashers.
Called Steve Cote who.picked me up and took me home.

Problem was the ignition switch crapped out. You would think the switch was 42 years old and died. You would think that the switch should last 50 years at least.
Took 20 minutes to replace the switch and all is good.
I carry tools in the bike but didn't have what I needed to do a permit g lot repair.
The bike is a 1976 Convert. Only the second time the bike was ever on a trailer

They aren't made to last any more.

Did you buy it new?

Is it something you can fix or contacts burnt away?

The Bosch starter solenoid puts over 40 Amps on the switch for a split second.

Any chance of a picture inside the old switch?

Seems to me a jumper from battery positive to coil low voltage commons turns on the ignition and bypasses everything else. At the start solenoid a properly placed (battery positive in to small spade actuator) set of steel plier handles actuates the starter solenoid and gets the bike running. Driving the bike beats the "ride of shame". Have done this for friends on the road a number of times. Works on more than Moto Guzzi.

It's not a bad idea to practice that in the comfort of your garage at home.
Make sure the bike is in neutral first.

Practicing something that throws big sparks and makes the bike lurch .... ?   I'll probably just wait for the emergency!

Hey, it's a Vert. Careful what you say. Converts don't lurch. No lurching. All you five speeders can go lurch when you throw sparks with pliers, but Converts have moved passed the lurching stage....

Me, minus the two croc clips. Haven't needed on the bike (yet) but used it on cars.

Where's your sense of adventure Lannis?
Reminds me of an incident in kiwi-land, laying in bed one morning heard a screeching of car tires, turns out the neighbour couldn't get his car to start so he had his wife with a jumper wire at the front doing something. Eventually he got it to start and pinned his wife to the end of the garage, the squeal of tires was him throwing it in reverse and flying backwards out the garage, luckily she wasn't hurt.
Cause of the problem car was in gear, automatics were not too common in NZ back in the late 70s

The riders manual actually says you have to get it above 35....

I found a really long hill on the way into Northampton Mass and tried it. Coasting downhill at 45 and releasing the clutch, it just slowed and didn't seem to ever spin the motor. No lurching though...! :bike-037:

Yes it is. Stock tires, would like to put bigger tires but that would make it more awkward to load the bike. I added the wheel chock, i need a thicker base as the one it came with flexes to much, so the bike will not stay vertical while strapping it down solo.
