It was a guy named Peterson I think that invented vice grips and the original ones were good but do wear out so looking for replacements I found that most of them that are not genuine vice grips are junk. Irwin comes close and are OK.  Snap-On vice grips are good but cost as much as a new dog.
Another thing to look for is a good anvil, some are worth a lot of money if they are made in the US.  I have my Grandpas but the one I use the most is a farriers anvil that only weighs 75lbs so you can bring it along. I traded a beat up 300lb anvil for it because I was moving around and it was getting hard for me to lift.

The Sperry ADM-18A automotive tester is still available here (though discontinued by Sperry):

https://www.dale-electric.com/products/view/ADM-18A

It has 1000V DC; 10 Amps current; tachometer for 3/4/5/6/8 cylinders (use 4 and multiply by 2 for a Guzzi); diode test; 20-20M ohms; dwell (for the same cylinder counts). I was happy to get one a year ago. They won't be coming back.

Other things to have are the biggest vise you can get (used), hand-operated brace/bit, and hand drill.

I think good beam-type torque wrenches are still available. The technical requirements for making one are pretty modest.

The hand drill gets slightly more use (good for drilling a blocked drain nozzle in the fuel overflow on tanks) than the brace & bit, but both are useful to have around.

I'm keeping my eye out for a VW flywheel holder (fits Guzzis) to replace the one I've borrowed. Word is that the old ones are made better than the cheap substitutes currently available. The bloke I know was quite happy to lend me one of the new ones (which works OK), but not prepared to let his old one out of his sight. Hens teeth, he said.

Holy s(*t, I was almost too late for the "points grease."   It's not made anymore by the usual vendors (Permatex, Bosch, AC Delco etc).  The last people who still make it are Standard Motor Products who put it out as Lubricam SL2.   It's not listed as points grease anymore, but as cam lube or distributor lube.  It looks like auto parts stores don't carry it, at least not the ones near me, just the internet.

Thanks to Antiem, John A, and 80CX100 , or I never would have thought of getting it.

I've got a 45 year old tube of Delco Remy Distributor Cam Lubricant if anybody wants it.
Never thought it would be a collectors item.
Oh, and I need a final drive for an EV.

Would you explain Population Tools for me? I'd never heard that before and it's not self explanatory.

Sure will Boss..!
A carbon based device, possessed by approximately half of the people on Earth.
It is used generally after drinking liquids, but can also be employed when attempting to perpetuate the species, or purely in a recreational role.
Handily placed at or about arms length.
When standing, if you allow your arm to hang vertically by your side solely under the effect of gravity, your hand should come to rest between 6 to 12 inches from aforesaid tool.
It can under the right circumstances “self adjust” to the required dimension for the job at hand but cannot be relied upon to do so 100% of the time... :embarrassed:
Anyway, speaking of which, I have to “get up” (as it were), that cup of tea has gone straight through me...
I hope that was clear enough

Thanks for the explanation, Huzo. Previously, I'd thought it might refer to those things used by the military to reduce populations.

I'm not into that shit either! Goes along with that old saying - make love, not war.

But how do you make love to a creep like Hitler or his kind? I never understood that.

Let me get this thread back to the real world.  The world where distributor/points grease are gone, ... maybe made by one company in the whole world wild.   Truly.

And there so many other tools necessary to pre injection bikes.  Let us know, and we will buy them, just to keep them from from being lost to the trash yards of the future.
