WV and PA at the top of the list jives with my recollection of frequency of deer carcasses passed.  I-81 in PA is a deer killing zone.

I'd have thought Oregon would be near the top.

Seems to me, deer hunting should be open season all the time.

Last two trips to ID, OR, NV, CA and AZ.  Most road kill were skunks.   Saw one dead deer, one pancaked coyote & a squirrel.  I ran over a rat going up the South Mountain park road to the summit.  Maybe dinner for a coyote up there.   :food:

Most folks around here would rather see deer starve to death rather than hunted. They are like rats running around at night so I play "dodge deer" and I use what my friend Bill calls theater lights. They will jump out from the side right on you and I hate the suckers. I have read that the population of deer is greater now than during the Revolutionary War. They should be exterminated

Ia is the 4th state in deaths,  if you ride through a deer here you are lucky, they total trucks around here.

It was in NY until about 1930 when all the deer and turkeys were  gone from rural areas ..Now the deer proliferate in suburbs where housing density protects them from human and some predatory animals...

Something wrong with this list. Pennsyltucky I can believe. Dead deer all over the place. Especially I-81 and I-476. But no way WV is #1. I've ridden all over West Virginia at deer o'clock. Not a prob. It's remarkable how few deer carcasses you ever see, considering all the woods there. On the rare occasion you do see deer, they are midgetary little things no bigger than a dog. Not like deer in the Rockies. Colder winters = bigger deer.

Including how much your insurance goes up is an interesting angle.

Don't hit a moose. You won't be there to collect the insurance

Unmitigated risk aversion is the new Puritanism; complete with witch hunts funny outfits and humorless preachers thundering doom. The Deity is Safety; Satan is a Lawyer; but the object is the same: to suck the life out of life and tell you how to live it.

Lots of hungry mountain folk to scoop 'em up.  A lot easier to catch if they're not moving, plus no wasted ammo.

Their 2016 data just came out:

https://newsroom.statefarm.com/state-farm-releases-2016-deer-collision-data

South Carolina slid out of the top 10 so I guess our Bubbas are doing their job.  I think adding the "primitive weapons" periods in the upstate has really helped.  In the low country SC is pretty much wide open from August 15 to New Years.

I hit a deer landing a Cessna 207 one morning on Center Island in Washington State. I used to haul the mail for the San Juan Islands. Deer were always a problem.

I hit a deer with a car in Illinois years ago, south of Chicago on I-57. Had the car towed as the impact smashed the front-end and busted the radiator. I hope I never have an encounter like that ever again, especially on a bike.

I've hit 2 deer on my bike, and several in my cars. SE Iowa is full of the damn things, and since we feed them the world's best corn 24/7 they are big. I spent time on several trips in Virginia and West Virginia. Their deer and coons are puny little creatures.

I could give a hundred reasons why it is a bad idea to exterminate an entire population of any creature . As for the deer population being greater now than 300 years ago , that is complete bull poopie . I suggest watching a documentary called "the secret life of deer" to gain some more understanding of these animals .

I hit a crow one time doing 80 mph and it rang my bell for sure.  I couldn't imaging hitting a deer at that speed. It'd probably be lights out for the both of us.

I don't know what would be worse...hitting a deer and causing major damage to your body and bike, or looking at that insurance premium hike afterwards for something that wasn't even your fault.

I hate insurance companies with a passion.

I was being humorous, I don't want to exterminate the poor bastards, I only feel that way when I hit one. I don't mind eating them. I'll watch that documentary. Last year in October we camped out at a deserted state campground just south of Elkader. The deer were all over and you could nearly walk right up to them. Like rats I tell ya

Here in Spokane, WA my wife and I have hit 9 deer in the last 16 years.  8 in cars/trucks and once on my Griso.  We have a 15 mile drive through the backroads to get anywhere, and the sneaky little bastards are everywhere.

It's gotten so I keep a .22 revolver in my car not for personal protection, but to put struck deer out of their suffering when I come upon a hit.

Last year, due to very dry conditions we had a deer kill off from a disease called "blue tongue".  This year you would never know it.  Just as many as ever.

I don't know why Colorado isn't a high-risk state for deer and elk collisions. Deer wander all over our residential neighborhoods in and near the foothills -- maybe our drivers are therefore more wary than folks elsewhere, just as they're (sometimes) better in snow. I do know that we often slow down for big horn sheep grazing at roadside. People are used to that.

Maybe because, in addition to a lot of hunters, we still have pumas in the mountains?  If so, it's a good argument for reintroducing wolves.
