True, but I can't complain. Mine hauls a bike, plywood, studs, etc. and doesn't cost $40K like a new pickup truck. And it doesn't lose it's value like a new vehicle.

Drove lots of Studebakers back in the mid 70's when working at a car auction in Denver/Arvada. To include the Avanti. Cool cars.

Contemplating making this my project over the winter: Wife's grandfather rode this for going on 40 years. After he passed on it went to brother in laws. His kids trashed it mowing 3 acre of weeds at their place. 10 horse Briggs is blown. Damn shame. Was almost spotless before they got a hold of it. Everything is there. PTO Tiller/original wagon with leaf blower attachment running off PTO and so forth.

My Boy scout Troop Leader had one of these.

Had an uncle who was a Hudson fan.

Best Man in our wedding had a gold Super Hawk....  I believe I was conceived in a '49 Hudson, so I go way back with the brand.  Later owned a '49 Super Six coupe and a '54 Wasp.

Studebakers were always my favorites. At the top of my list is an early sixties Gran Turismo, but I wouldn't kick a Golden Hawk or 53 two door hardtop out of bed either.  :>)

Golden Hawk. It was supercharged. The Silver Hawk was naturally aspirated.

You guys have some cool projects, diggin' the Studubakers.

I am embarrassed to admit how long I have been bringing the VeeDub back to life...

Every year or so I throw a few more dollars at it, this past Summer I had had the entire interior done as stock.  Gorgeous.
These photos are when I had the dropped front axle with disc brakes installed.

Getting close to the road but it will not see the Maine Winter roads so Spring time at the earliest.

We have owned since 1993, bought the 1969 Old Blue from the original owner that purchased it in Nov of 1968.

The poor thing sat for years, always in the garage while the kids were in college, I went through a time when I lost interest in it as we drove MGs also.

I am slowly finishing the VW... :embarrassed:

This is the current MGB that we have enjoyed for fourteen years.

Avanti

In 1980 with my future ex-wife behind me we were taking a lazy ride on my new H-D Tour Glide through western PA and we stopped to look around at the car show this little town was having.  I wandered upon and identical Avante with a hand written window sticker.  The car was spotless and had cream leather interior.  $3,650.00
I remember thinking I wish I made more money, as it was I was bike poor.

$3650?  Wow, that was a good deal it sounds like.  Im thinking of trading my 1952 Studebaker 2R5 for a Jeep Wrangler or CJ-7, if I can find nybody interested.  Im undecided though???   Tough to get rid of the Studebaker.  It needs work but its still partially a Studebaker (Different engine)

Don't do it Bob. Jeeps are a dime a dozen and you'll never replace the Studebaker. Keep it and find a used Jeep to do whatever driving your are interested in. Just my .02 cents

That rascal looks pretty darn straight, actually. I've dabbled in old Simplicity's, a replacement Briggs is easy to find, might not need much else to bring it up to snuff.

Wow, the Avanti was a kick ass back in...well, a long time ago.  It was serious cutting edge and pretty darn quick.  I believe the company was on life support at the time so the model suffered.  After Studebaker folded a number of companies tried to keep the model alive.    At one point the cars had Corvette engines.   An un-molested Avanti would be a true treasure now.
I believe the earlier ones were powered by the Studebaker 289cc V8.  If my memory is still working (???) I think the engine was equipped with a belt driven Paxton supercharger.

I recall when I was 10 years old, my older brother (12 yrs older) invited me to jump in the car and visit the Studebaker dealer in uptown Charleston WV.  The 1953 models had just arrived, and I could not believe Studebaker !? had introduced such a stylish automobile.

Approx 10 years later, I got to drive a friend's dad's Silver Hawk.  Beautiful ivory paint, leather interior, with 4 on the floor.  I think the V8 in this car was rated at 225hp, and was normally aspirated.

Very nice Studebakers!

I've always thought that Moto Guzzi and Studebaker had similar business paths.

Both companies put out well engineered products, but always seem to be chronically underfunded. I think Studebaker may have survived longer with strategically designed marketing, but that goes back to their funding as well as the way they were managed.

I would really like to have Super Hawk someday.

In the early 70s I lived in Montana and worked in Yellowstone.  The Forest Service had bought a *lot* of Studebaker Larks for their fleet and were selling them now as surplus for pennies.  Everyone I knew had at least one in their fleet, and some had several with the intention of keeping one running forever.

Oh -- and I dated one of the Studebaker family when I was a teenager.  I didn't know the significance of the name when we were seeing each other, and it annoyed her.  It was a summer thing.
