Title: Next project - 1977 Lemans
Post by: Scout63 on April 17, 2022, 04:50:01 PM
I need to sort a couple of final things on my G5, but after that I’m going to finish the restoration on this ‘77 Lemans.  I picked it up in NY with the 900SS as an uncompleted restoration out of Colorado. It needs installation of the main wiring harness, fairing, ignition box and left-side switches.  The former owner appears to have been very careful and correct in his work, down to very nice frame paint.  I saw some of his Bultaco racers and they were immaculate. The brakes are de-linked with nice stainless hoses. I’ve ordered parts to link them again.  I can’t wait to finish it and ride a Lemans for the first time.

That's quite a trailer full of premium Italian motorcycles, Ben.  It must have been a pretty great ride home.

It was a nice ride home up the Hudson River valley but I must have stopped ten times to check the straps. I was lucky to be able to buy those bikes.  It was more than a financial transaction both for me and the seller.

I figured out pumper carbs last night.  It was slow going rebuilding the first one.  The main jets were pretty chewed up and the pilot jets super clogged. Luckily the parts stash from Harry included bags of jets.  The only problem was reading them with my old eyes.

Yeah, these days I have a few magnifying glasses in the tool box and a cheapo from HF with base & aligator clips to hold work.  I should probably look into one of those fancy shmancy ones with an articulating arm & light.  Anyway, nice project bikes, looking forward to seeing more as the projects progess.

Those pumper carbs baffle me, I have read up on the number of squirts the carb should deliver but still have not been able to replicate the ‘stock’ number of squirts by adjusting the set screw. Glad to hear someone has sorted them, maybe one day I will ‘get it’.
Nice machine you have there, it’s going to be a sweet ride when your done.

A friend has owned his 1977 900SS for over 30 years and rides it regularly.  He found the pumpers to be problematic (fouling plugs) and disconnected it, and much prefers running it that way.

I’m not even close to pulling the carbs on the 900.  Hopefully in a week or two.  I haven’t tried to adjust the pump rate on the LM 36s, just cleaned everything and reassembled.  Today was windy and cold.  I had a work site visit in the morning, then had a quiet afternoon in the garage.  There is a nesting pair of sparrows in one of my old bicycle helmets in the garage, and they were feeding the young all afternoon. Very relaxing to listen to.  I was able to wire the charging system, coils and Dyna box:

Neat rebuild. Just one small observation, front calipers should be behind fork legs on LM. Just swapping left to right will achieve this.

Negative.......

850 Lemans had the calipers out front, a quick google for original brochures will confirm

Yup, calipers out front. The Brochures for the LeMans II shows rear mounted calipers.

Apologies, so many early LeMans were changed to rear mounted I'd forgotten 🥴 I always preferred rear mounted as caliper mount forces became compressive, seems Guzzi did as well.

Thanks Groover. I used to like rear mounted calipers for my G5 and you helped me see the light.

Closing out this thread.  I traded the Lemans back to my seller in part exchange for another bike. Hopefully I will cross paths with another in the future.
