Piaggio Fails Owners Again
« on: August 29, 2023, 01:08:38 PM »
I've had my V85tt for just over 2 years and have experienced 28000 km of pretty much trouble free riding.  Upon return from the Ontario Guzzi Riders Rally in Ontario Canada I found a light splatter of gear lube on the rear wheel.  Yes gear lube is coming from the drain hole on the driveshaft tube/stay indicating a seal failure on the bevel drive. Yes only 2 weeks out of warranty.  Not a big deal right, just pick up a new seal and change it.  NOT!!!!   On back order until February .     So my bike will be laid up until February.  That's not going to happen.  Sure as hell someone make a seal that will fit.  If not, time to buy a Honda because I've about had it.   Last year my Aprilia was in the shop for 13 mos awaiting waterpump seals for a warranty claim.  Piaggio has to do better!!!

I'm not familiar with the final drives on small blocks but like any of my tonti bikes I never ordered the final drive seal from MG, I just drove two miles down the road to Motion Industries, etc. and ordered a seal.

If it’s the pinion seal, then you can easily do it yourself.
Mine went at 10,000 km and I was told that I’d have to wait for my claim to be assessed by Piaggio.
Bugger that..!
I just paid them $70 at my local dealer and they did it while I had a coffee and burger.
Went for a ride that afternoon.
That was 30,000 km back.

As much as I hate chain maintenance I would definitely be going back to chain if I had to wait that long on a part.

My bike has been at the dealer two months waiting on the front end parts to repair the deer strike damage.

A. 5 months for a part? 13 months for warranty seal repair? That’s hilariously frustrating. Sorry to read.

B. What is the driveshaft tube/stay? Part of the swingarm? If so, I don’t see a drain hole. Is this a seal you can make yourself?

When i worked at a NAPA store my fellow long time parts guy had a bearing and seal book. He guarded it like it was a Rolex. It had all the dimensions for a bazillon seals and bearings. It was a NAPA parts book but no longer available. My point is that any business that deals in these things should be able to find one that will work. Rare that it would be a one only part. Also this is the main reason I have two bikes, I don't want to be left high and dry without a ride.

There were a bunch of 2020's that were recalled, right?  If yours falls into that batch then, as I recall, there was some issue with the crown or axle...had a sharp edge that could damage the seal as it was installed.
I had one of them, but it was fixed fairly promptly.

Yes mine is a 2020 and there were a number of recalls carried out prior to delivery.   Whether it would be covered by Guzzi is a moot point if they don't have the part.

Which seal - #2 (32x52x7), #11 (38x50x7) or #27 (80x100x10)?

It's likely a common seal, available at any good bearing supplier. #2 should be fairly easy to replace (it was on a '13 V7 Stone anyway), #11 and #27 are a *little* more involved.

On the face of the seal should be cast three numbers O.D. x I.D. X thickness. Google that or take to any electrical motor rebuild shop and or bearing supply house and, in a day, or three you have a new seal for a fraction of the cost of the OEM,

It is number 2 on the parts diagram and is shared with the V9 and V7lll.
Part number is 2B000404..   where would one find the dimensions prior to disassembly.

Try putting the seal part number into a search engine to see if you can get the seal dimensions, then get a replacement seal from an industrial supplier.  Piaggio is buying their seals from an industrial supplier, you might as well do the same.

If not, call around to some MG dealerships to see if the mechanics will give you the dimensions.  Might cost you a case of beer, but I would gladly pay that.

If not, tear it apart and measure it.

Good luck.

Search for the seal by the dimensions given has numerous sources.

  32 x 52 x 7 seal

  https://www.google.com/search?q=32+x+52+x+7+seal&rlz=1C1BLWB_enUS593US637&oq=32+x+52+x+7+seal&aqs=chrome..69i57j33i160l2j33i22i29i30l4.8792j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Anyone have it in stock is the question.

Just for clarity and future reference, I don’t see the V7 III popping up as a compatible model for this seal, just the V9, V85TT, and V7 E5; essentially, all the 850 models. They have different style swingarms, driveshafts, and final drives from the older small blocks. The V7 III still shares its respective parts with the older models (V7 II and back)
