Lake Superior Loop/MN Rally
« on: March 09, 2019, 08:47:58 AM »
Doing a Superior Loop this summer and wondered - is the MN rally typically as cold as it was last year?

What can one expect in June going around Superior, especially on the North Side of Thunder Bay?

It's generally decent riding temps in June.

I've been to the MN Rally the last four years and am expecting to go again this June.  The temperatures in Grand Marais are not very much warmer than the water temps, particularly if the wind is off the Lake and pushing into the community.  And, it's going to rain.  Maybe not all day when it rains, and maybe not every day of the Rally, but plan on rain sometime during the weekend.

As for the weather up over the top of the Lake -- I don't quite agree with Fotoguzzi.  I would plan more for the 35 to 75 degree range and be ready for rain.  Definitely take your heated riding gear.

However, it's a great trip.  Enjoy the ride.

I lived on the North Shore for 7 years, up over the slope it can be blazing hot (90's) when it's 60 along the shore.  more likely in July/August.

I'd love to hear any travel tips regarding routing, places to stay/see, and most importantly - who has the good beer  :boozing: along this route.

Duluth is the home to Aerostich, you could stop there.. Pickwick in Duluth has a great Pepper Cheese burger.. Gunflint trail if you want to ride pavement through wilderness (also if you take the Canada route).. cross lake Michigan by ferry (quite an experience but not cheap) instead of driving thru Chicago.. or go round the top of Superior in Canada, rural- watch for Mounties, logging trucks and their debris..
not a beer drinker but I think there are some craft breweries in Duluth and even up the No shore.

Watch for milepost 57 as you head north along the north shore.  The Palisades can be viewed from the tower site at the top of the hill.  A worthwhile stop for a leg stretcher.

Word has it that Kevin Mackey is already working at the Grand Marais harbor getting things prepped.

Kev’s Butt is bigger and his legs aren’t that long even when standing up straight. But it’s probably one of his relatives.

Weather could be just about anything, as previously posted. Could be nice, but just as likely, not so nice. Rain is always possible, but typically sprinkly, not pouring rain. And yes, I am a Finlander!  Kevin

Weather should be fine. Warm days and cool mornings. Bring lots of bug spray for June in Northern Ontario. The mosquitoes are bad but it's the blackflies I can't stand.
