I don't think the camera has to identify the driver in Australia , they  just snap the plate and send infringement notice to the registered owner.  If someone else was driving the owner has to indicate who was behind the wheel.

Highway cameras were declared unconstitutional in my state.

UK is the same, been a couple of controversial cases where a driver with points has tried to get his partner to take the wrap and the police dug some more and it did not end well. One well documented was the MP Chris Hune and his wife (at the time) Vicky Pryce

On the other side there was one where the couple, the former disgraced MP Neil Hamilton and his wife, stated that they could not remember who was driving at the time and the case got dropped

This probably had nothing to do with "forgetting", so much as they were people of privilege.

Hi all,

Last year  received a "Notice of Violation" from the Massachusetts DMV stating that I drove through a toll booth without paying about three weeks prior.  The charge was $25 + $3.75 for the toll.  I called the number on the ticket and told them that I haven't been in Mass in over ten years, and neither has my car.  After several calls, I finally got someone to look at the camera image.  I drive a white SUV with NY plates.  The image was a blue sedan with Pennsylvania plates.  The first three letters were the same as mine but obviously not me.  The person on the other end of the phone was sympathetic, but recommended that I pay the fine and she would file a case to protest the ticket.  I paid the fine because I didn't want my driving record or credit to get dinged.  Still waiting for my refund.

They tried them in CT some decades ago. Was ruled unconstitutional as the camera only took a picture of the rear plate. Who's driving? It was also determined if the vehicle was going faster than 85 MPH the camera wouldn't get the picture of the vehicle...

Got a fine notice of violation from FL with photo of a Harley bagger on which, to me at least, the tag was unreadable but FL officials read as the tag that’s on my wife’s Vespa. An email from me to that effect and all was forgiven/forgotten.
Apparently a large percentage of “violations” there are similarly dismissed.

Awry is right.   "Guilty until proven innocent" in Massachusetts?   Not a moving violation - I wouldn't have paid.

I wouldn't have paid too.  Not likely that I would be driving in that state.  Traffic violations are a concern of one state to another.  I did get a parking ticket on my Recon in Honolulu.  I threw it away.  The bike still had AZ plates on it.

I had a similar incident with the Mass DMV, only worse.    The plate of mine that they said was the one in question is registered to a 1968 CL175 motorcycle, and the date fo the alleged toll was in the middle of the winter.   The vehicle pictured was an SUV.

Heard that on the Radio this morning, bloody scary

How soon before there is no individual freedoms left due these dammed pressure/lobby groups.

I despair today, everybody is out to ban/imprison/punish whoever does not agree with them 100% (whatever happened to live & let live?) oppresion is the result. The state uses this to take our freedoms away a nibble at a time and we gladly hand them over.

I keep thinking one day we'll wake up, but a generation who hand over their personal data to make Mr Zukerburg cash does not fill me with hope.

Just getting old I guess

I turned in a set of antique tags and several months later began getting tickets from EZPass in VT....
Now if I surrender plates/tags to PennDot they are mangles to a point they cannot reissue them. I also request a dated letter from PennDOT stating I surrendered the tags.

I've never surrendered tags back to PennDOT, and never had been requested to do so.
They make nice decorations for the garage wall.

Hi Perazzimx14,

Your story was an inspiration, makes me think it's possible that mine will have a happy ending.  Or maybe I'll just get off my lazy butt and pursue it with Mass DMV.
We'll see.
