So the 40's seem to be the fix. He did say that if I still have an issue, go to 135 mains, or just ride my 1600cc HD :whip2:

You may have gone down the right track too far. In a previous posting on this thread that you seem to have overlooked, I passed along Pete Roper's recommendation to use a file to make a much smaller change than the jump from a 60 to a 40 cutaway.

Since you will spend a lot of time at the throttle opening that is governed by the cutaway, it might be prudent to look for signs of excessive richness by doing a throttle chop. You also could experience a drop in gas mileage if you're running too rich there.

But better is good. So congratulations.

Moto,

You could be right. I will look for signs of too rich. But....

When I look at Guzziology carb specs. It looks like only one instance of a 60 slide and it does not tell you what model ran them. I think all of the VHB "T" series bikes run the 40 slide. I think I just happened to get the odd one when I bought this set on fleabay many years ago to try on my 850. I may have been going down the wrong path trying to make the 60 slides work????? At this point where I'm at, I think I should have just grabbed a set of 40's like the shop manual and Guzziology said it should be.

If it looks like I'm too rich, I do have some 60 slides that I'm willing to mess with.

I have more riding to do and checking the fuel mileage, plugs ect. before calling this done.

Thank you all again!!!

That sounds very reasonable.

Of the bikes that had VHB 30's, the late V7 Sports through the T-series, the Cal II, and the Cx100 and 1000 SP all had #40 slides. It was the Convert and the G5 1000cc bikes -- EDIT: with "US" emissions standards tuning -- that had 60's and long mixture screw tapers. The early V7 Sports had 50's. [EDIT: all per my copy of Guzziology, version 5.1.]

Your choice of 40's may be good. I  It's nice you have a spare set of 60's to play with.

I am under the impression -- maybe wrong -- that steps of 10 in the slide cutaway mean differences of 1mm. If so, I'm running #33 cutaway slides right now, after my filing.

From what I can find, each "10" step is 1mm. A 40 is 2mm less than a 60.

Pics of a 60 and 40.

I have a few pairs of worn 60's. Got them about 20 years ago.

Your slight mod may have worked for me as well. My local shop had some used 40's for me to try before buy. Figured might as well give that a shot and see what happens.

Thanks again!!!!

I thought the 40 thing was covered months ago (since i have the same engine which ran like a champ from the first start)

#40 is 4 mm
#60 is 6 mm.

LesP: Previously was to get the carbs working with the engine. It ran fine overall. This time was to be sure where I needed to go to solve the quick start issue. If I never needed to make a quick start and just rode around starting up with the traffic, I could have left it alone.

Thanks again!!!

What a great photo! I now see that 60's can be filed to any smaller cutaway. You should be able to tune to perfection with your collection.
