2000 V11 Sport clutch noise
« on: July 19, 2021, 08:04:58 PM »
Hello -

I have a few V11 Sports, but my 2000 model seems to have an annoyingly loud cutch noise at idle when the lever is NOT pulled in.

Having tried to gain access to the clutch slave for removal (no way).. I had to remove the swingarm to get the slave out.

Now that the slave and pushrod are out (as I thought perhaps the needle/thrust bearing was the culprit), the noise seem to come from inside the clutch housing. This is a rattling/knocking noise that sometimes goes away if you pull the clutch lever in a few times - but then will come back to varying degrees.

My question is this: Has anyone else experienced this? Does this mean further investigation/trans removal/clutch replacement?

I have searched the forum but have yet to find a thread that directly addresses this issue...
Any related experiences and advice are greatly appreciated!

I think they all do that.  Well, mine does.

You can check with the experts.

Mine does it also.  Just the gears in the tranny rattling around due to the pulses of a big twin at idle is what I always figured.  Never worried about it.  20k miles and hasnt changed.

LowRyter & TDF -

Thank you for the replies-

I have a 2004 V11 Sport which does not make these noises at idle - in fact, it is extremely quiet. I realize that a major characteristic of the dry clutch is the plate rattle sound when the clutch lever is pulled in. But again, my 2000 makes a lot of noise when the lever is not pulled in.

Is this a characteristic of early red frame V11 Sports or something else that may be of issue?? I have only my 2004 to compare to....

My 2002 V11 Scura would do the same...noisy with clutch out, quiet with clutch in.

Since I had the original single plate clutch replaced by MPH a couple of years ago, the rattle at idle with clutch out is now also minimal, much less than stock and completely non existent with clutch in...

I wish I could hear it or let you hear mine but from your description it really sounds similar to mine.  Mine will even do the thing where when you pull in the clutch lever and release 2 or 3 times you might find one that will make the rattle go away for a while.  I am convinced on mine that is nothing to worry about and many years and many miles later it is still going strong and the noise is still there.  I chalk it up to the tolerances within the internal parts of the tranny' why some would be less noisy than others.

Thanks TDF -

As mentioned, I have a low mileage 2004 V11 Sport that is very quiet at in this regard and am comparing the 2000 to this.

I know the rear transmission support webbing on the 2000 has a crack, so I guess I will at least be removing this (somehow) and have it repaired - probably will install a new output shaft seal as well.

Based on all the feedback, I may save myself the fun of removing the transmission to inspect the clutch...
