Car tire for Rear 2002 EV Sidecar rig
« on: June 10, 2018, 02:15:51 PM »
Does anyone here run a car tire on the rear of their EV sidecar rig.........looking for a car tire size that will clear the swingarm.  I think
the stock motorcycle tire size is 140/80/17.

Thanks............. ..Tim

With a 140 wide wheel your choices are limited to basically donut spares. While some do get decent mileage out of them on DR650 and KLR side car rigs they are more expensive than a lot of motorcycle tires and don't get double or triple the mileage. I was going to get one of these spares from my DR650 rig but they end up being to expensive.

Your next viable choice is a 195/50-17 which is about the narrowest normal sized car tire in 17". At some point I am going to put a 195/50-17 on my DL650 just to try it. Its not a sidecar rig but I've pissed away $60 in much less desirable ways. The DL650 does have a 150 rear wheel.

I dont think there are any that will fit the stock rim size. If you find one, I would be interested for my03 aluminum sidecar rig. I think you would have to lace on a 15 or 16" rim to fit a car tire on the rear.

In europe sidehack riders use tyres made for the citreon 2cv but i think they would need a smaller rim lacing on.

My problem is the clearance on the drive shaft side........current ly less than 1/4". Even with going to another size rim.....14,15,16  ... I think
I will still have the same clearance issue. I don't think I would go with one of the temp spares.......may just continue on with the stock size bike tire. I will check the tire wear throughout the summer to see how the regular bike tire wears.

If you decide to use a 14” wheel.  You probable won’t need a modified tree for the pull in front end.Rudyr

If you have the cash they make wheels for car tires for sidecar rigs. I have a squared off Avon on the front, the back is the hardest touring tire for wear, sidecar wheel is off a Civic, hub and all.
If you want to make it a dedicated  rig  you can lace a rim on your hub, moved over to the left, there is lots of room. The wheel will no longer be in the middle of the swingarm but will go down the road fine.
There's no cheap alternative that is safe.

The guy that made my sidecar also rode some Guzzi's and was going to put a splined hub on a stamped steel VW Bug rim, cheapest fix yet if you know a machinist.

Another clearance problem is diameter. I bought an antique truck or car tire from Coker tire that mounted up to the 17" on my Bassa, I have changed to the later swingarm and wheel from an 02. it wouldn't fit the swngarm because it hit the crossbrace which I then moved only to discover that it wouldn't clear the u joint housing. so diameter is a limiting factor. Moving it over to the left would do it but I was trying to make it happen without relaceing a wheel.Like Steve said there does not appear to be an inexpensive safe way to do it. In my limited experience lacing wheels, I've come to believe that tubeless spoked wheels get sent to Buchannons while tube types can be done at a home shop.

Moved over to the left was reference to the rim on the hub, it was a printing fart, fixit w/a comma maybe

Chris Collins the Wisconsin Moto Guzzi rep has done this to a jackal, if I’m not mistaken he has car tire on all three wheels. He is a member of this forum but I can’t recall his user name, searching for him by name in members didn’t find him. Perhaps he will see the post and respond. He was also in the process of getting an enlarged gas tank last time I saw him. If you want to see him just make plans to attend the Wisconsin sin Guzzi rally. August 4 I believe.

Chris Collins is ccoli. Very knowledgeable  and a good guy.

I got somebody fooled
BTW mine is an 03EV
I found15" aluminum undrilled  rims only from a BMW shop in California. Bought a set of bent wheels from a Jackal or Stone. Stripped the spokes and bent rims off the hubs myself.  Sent hubs and rims to Buchanan who provided new Heavy gauge spokes and laced them up. Had some offset put in to shift the rim slightly to the left. All good and groovvy? Nope.
Found out California models with tubeless wheels, EV and others, have a whole lot of different parts than the tube types, Jackal,  Stone etc. So the hubs I had laced up didn't fit  :undecided:
Eventually had to procure Stone rear drive, axle, brake mount and spacers.
I run 15" tires designed for a Smart Car, 145/65-15 front and 165/65-15 rear. Tried the 145s on the hack but it rubbed too much and Judi didn't like the aroma. So I went with old fashioned skinnier  VW tire for that.
All is grooving now :bike-037:
Have my old EML steel wheels the rig came with, original tug was an 86 SPII. Had some issues with the rear cracking at the welds. Rewelded  it myself and it held for a while, but I'm not very good at it. Had a pro try it and it's probably strong now, but not pretty. Haven't tried using them since as I did all the above instead.
I'd be open to offers on those EML wheels.
My memory for details sucks anymore but, I could look them up if anyone cares.

Thanks Chris for posting that info here.
Looks like it wouldn't cost more than a few thousand to do it that way    So for now I think I'll go with the stock setup!
You could however remove the LL front end and send it to me, so I could see how it rides on my 02 .......I knew I should have stolen the LL
set you left here last year for Roadkill........so much for being a nice guy!

I uglied the LL to the point that it's safe from reappropriation.   :afro:. It works good though.  Today I'm installing a pair of fabbed reaction rods for the floating calipers.  4130 chromoly this time, welded by actual welders (instead of mild steel welded by me).  Maybe I won't break more struts.

toolittletime  Chris and Judi go long distance with their hack.  If you're not planning on doing that then you might be okay just running the stock wheels and finding cheapie tires for the rear.  Chris did spend money and time setting up his hack.  Nice job too.  :thumb:  I run Cheng Shen tires that I got from JB in Ill.  I'm running stock sizes and I only stay local with my hack.

Great info here...
 thanks to those contributing.

I had considered going to the Dark Side for the EV Hack but became dizzy with all the options at the time so I just bought another ME880.

In my research however, I discovered the Austone Taxi tire.  The size in only in 175R 16" diameter so that would require a new rim so I figured Buchannan's could help there.

The Trike Wheels that Charlie provided links for look to be a great alternative, even though one requires an exchange plus they are a bit spendy.

Now that I have the time to do this project I may look at the conversion again.

Best,
Rob

Stay with the stock rear tire set-up.  To modify it would take time and money....more than you'd probably would like to put into it.
