Distinguished Gentleman's Ride '23
« on: May 19, 2023, 07:34:01 AM »
It's this Sunday. Taking the V11 Sport.

Not a lot of mention of it although the local ride has the biggest signup ever with 51.

Indianapolis swings above it's weight, bringing in large numbers in both riders in dollars in recent years.

Part of the appeal is we have a local guy and a Guzzisti who casts these exceptional awards

Burnishing this years batch last night....

This is my 8th year. I'll run the G5 again this year. Ya'll should feel free to donate to a good cause, and one that brings broader visibility to the motorcycling scene aside from what most people think of...Baggers and the sport bikes that scare the bejeezus out of them on the highway....

I tried to sign up last year but my '01 California EV wasn't accepted. I signed up this past Tuesday and to my surprise my EV was ok, although my plan was to use my '84 Cal II with the sidecar that I recently acquired. They automatically set my goal at $1,00.00. I didn't have time to get sponsors to raise money. Then I was looking at how you're supposed to dress and I don't think I want to ride in my suit and tie.  I really don't think that I would be "dapper" enough to fit in with this group. No offense to the cause, but I'm not high enough on the totem pole. I'll just send my own donation to the cause and do something else with my day.

Sorry that's the case. That sidecar would be a great addition.

I get the impression that there's a lot of variation between rides as to enforcement of the guidelines. And in my pic, I'm in full armor with the exception of my chin. Bohn armored shirt under my shirt and tie, Black jeans with knee and hip armor, my regular TCX laceup shitkickers with ankle protection, riding gloves. Just bought an oversized jacket used and a 8$ bow tie off amazon. We've had V rods and baggers and Goldwings on the ride even though they're not listed in the guidelines. The only hard line our ride has ever drawn is helmets. No helmet, no ride.

No no.  You can ride any bike, just make up the select thing to closest.  Agree the sign is a PIA>

What to wear?  sometimes I wear a Grateful Dead Tshirt.   No one can tell how to dress.  It's not serious.

This year I signed late due to travel plans and I'm not raising any money.  I'm moral support to those that do.

Don't take it seriously.

A bit late on this... just tried to sign up for the Dahlonega ride but the registration is full, bummer. Going to be a beautiful day tomorrow, guess I'll ride up on the Le Mans and be a spectator at TWO.

Dude, if you wanna ride, just show up.  First, no one will know or even care.  Probably just be glad they had more riders show up.  Next, the road belongs to the public.  No one can tell you where to ride.

Wasn't sure if they are escorted, but yeah thinking about doing that. Tomorrow will be perfect weather and there will be a ton of bikes up at TWO. Now I just have to get myself up to Dalonega by 9am... skipping the whiskey tonight. Have a good ride on your side!

We had a good turn out here in Perth, West Oz. Weather was perfect and after the event I headed up the hills for a wander through the hills back home.
I think the prerequisite for a retro bike style is out the window as most bikes were modern.

I like the concept and the cause.  I don’t care so much for group rides or the hipster aesthetic. It’s no less valid than the vintage European vibe that I like. That’s what makes motorcycling great - it draws all kinds.

Agreed. And of course the point isn't to create enjoyment for riders primarily, it's to raise money and visibility. As a ride I always find it frustrating, as a visible fundraiser, it's pretty extraordinary. They are to be 25 miles and 40 MPH so it doesn't last too long.

Agreed on the modern bikes. I had a Chieftain and Paningale along side me for much of the day. I like your choice of steed!

Guzzi was pretty well represented at our ride. Only 5 of the 200 bikes were Guzzi's, but one of us sponsored the ride and made the awards, one was ride guide, and one won 50% of 'most dapper couple'.

Raised millions for a good cause, so it's worth a little effort.

the rules for DGR are that speeds have to be under 25mph.  really.

I wore a Guzzi tshirt, riding jeans. all my normal gear and a leather jacket. The jacket has a small V11EV patch on it.  I've worn Grateful Dead tshirts in the past.  There are plenty of fancy dandies.  I'm not one.  I wear riding gear, even at 25 mph.

Glad you guys had fun. But seems there are still complete tools running some of these rides.

Actually I think that makes them worse than the despicable Harley crowd that they look down on all the time.

They tried so hard to be different that they wound up being the same.

PS. My earlier characterization definitely fits them and any soft lady-boy here who goes off and complains to moderators because they need a safe space.

Me I think I'll keep skipping the Big"D"gr rides thanks.

Peace out

I'm trying to understand...What has led you to think any of the leaders are 'tools'? Did you have a bad experience on a ride? Do you know orgin of the ride? I've never seen anyone turned away, so I'm not sure who you speculate they're looking down on.

There were well over 100,000 people riding in 121 different countries in 850 different cities on the same day. Pretty impressive that your so well acquainted, to make that kind of sweeping generalization. Not usually a hallmark of a well read guy. But do tell, I'm always happy to be informed.

It's a themed fundraiser for prostate cancer research and mens mental health initiatives to prevent suicide  (Movember Foundation)- two leading causes of death in men that were previously not beneficiaries focused fundraising efforts.

basically a fun way to get through a shitty ride intended to raise awareness.

ok, might've misunderstood.... well the group leader did.   Really 25mph.  not hot weather, so it was ok.

I'm not big on group rides either.  But I make exceptions.  The photos should reflect that.

how about this gals ride?

Sounds like at least a few had fun on the DGR. I'd mentioned it a while back to one of the local Guzzi crew and he said something like "dress up like a bunch of hipster clowns, no effing way," or words to that effect. So I guess will just have to organize our own DGR, the Disgruntled Geezers Roundup. We'll get all the old farts that still ride and meet up at one of the dive bars in town, there's quite a few to choose from, have a beer, and then ride out to the Howling Dog in Fox. It's about 25 miles (total) and the best dive bar by far around here. Everybody rides on their own, no route or speed limit, and then will have a beer and a burger (optional). After that everybody's on their own, cause 2 beers is my limit. No angst, no problems.
