Well, the day has finally come to give him a try.
First, where we stand now...everything set in place just to get the visual reward...

Timing was dead on, charging system charged, after some fiddling with idle position, mixture and balance, got a nice idle (more later). No leaks, no alarming smells or sounds. Great news! Still lots of little details to chase down...but I think that will perpetually be the case.
In the not-great-news, I'm 6' tall and the previous owner wasn't, and so the seat pan on this "king and queen" seat is so far forward for me that I can't ride like this. I've always hated the seat but it's what it came with, however what better reason to get rid of it.
Of what I could see, the seat pan looked ok, but if I'm going to have this recovered, best to get the cover off and see what we have.
Yeah, it's pretty bad. Anything is saveable with enough time and effort, but I'm really not sure this one is worth it.
Corbin is an hour's drive for me and they will build a seat while you wait, but with a seat pan in this condition I'm not sure this is an option.
Definitely curious of the collective's thoughts?

Pretty sure they (Corbin) can build a new pan that will not rust, but may not be ready while you wait. Sounds like a sensible solution, though, to get custom seat made for you :thumb:

may i ask whats the nice cnc machine in the pictures that can cut ally plate?

It is/was an Obsidian MCX3 - 6(Y) x 9(x) x 10(z) "mini mill". They were made locally so I got an early machine and picked it up from where they were made. I don't see that he's still making these anymore but I've asked him to see what's going on.
It's definitely a hobby mill, powerful and accurate enough to make parts out of most materials - it lacks coolant capabilities and dry-cutting steel is not a lot of fun so I stick to aluminum for structural parts. It's (I think) a 1.25HP machine which means you can run bigger tools, but that also means your 6x9x10 table gets smaller much faster than you think it would.

It has been many days since my last confession. So we'll start with the fun stuff, and stick around for the OMG emergency at the end...
First, more 3d printing fun - I have 2 separate enrichment devices, one on each carb. One lever was plastic (and broken) the other was the cast "pot metal" lever (which was not broken). To replace the broken one, I designed a 3d model and printed it at my local library for free. And for the time it took to print one, it was just as easy to print two. I replaced the broken one, and in the process of getting the bike running, the metal one broke, so now is 3d printed levers on both sides.
Spent quite a bit of time cleaning up the wiring and figuring out how to put the stock harness back, but also undo some of the kludges that were in place to get the fairing to work. All that's cleaned up and working as it should...
More time cleaning and painting, which included finding a new seat-pan which took a very long time indeed. My original pan was too far gone after futile attempts to try and save it. And thanks to MarkE at MGC, I have a great pan to rebuild a seat from.
Now the OMG emergency - cleaning the old adhesive off the seat pan made a mess in the shop, so I wheeled out the shopvac to clean up and when I wheeled it back, I found this on the floor...
It LOOKS like a mainshaft shim, which should be inside the gearbox and not in my hand. I don't remember this falling out, but possibly it did. I also seem to remember checking the stack when I put it in the casing, but possibly I didn't. Anyway, if someone can ID this before I pull the gearbox back out, that would save me some heartache - but I'm pretty sure it's coming out anyway. The dimensions of the thing are 44.40mm OD, 25.50mm ID, 2.57mm thick - the only thing that has me thinking it's NOT a mainshaft shim is the thickness...it's thicker than I would expect. Anyway, any opinions welcomed.
