All's well in Cedar Vale tonight. Fantastic fish fry. Great campfire. Lightning dancing on the horizon, but dry here at Hewins Park.

Rode there in the rain all the way Sat morning.  Sun came out Sat afternoon and had a good ride through the Kansas hill country to dry out the gear. Saturday night storms came back, tent leaked, gear got soaked from the inside out.  Rain clouds chased me all the way home.  Learned I can go at least 25 miles on low fuel light and the bike started shifting badly on the way home but that'll be for a different thread.  Had a good time despite the weather and the hush puppies were worth the effort, and I got a t-shirt.

A few photos from in and around Cedar Vale this weekend...

US-166, a few miles east of Cedar Vale.  It rained on me all but a few of the 200 miles to the event.

Gateway to Cedar Vale.  The old Marsh Arch bridge on Heritage Road.

Hewins Park in Cedar Vale, location of the NAR.

The 1880s barn/pavillion makes the park a great place for an all-weather event.

Colors courtesy Daniel Kalal.

A few folks hanging out in the pavillion Saturday afternoon:

And some of the bikes:

Yep.  A law-abiding bunch...

Beautiful Saturday afternoon will soon give way to a stormy Saturday Night.

It may not look like much, but Dusty really cranked out some good fish and hush puppies.  And, though the potato was crusty on the outside, it was perfect on the inside!

A few Saturday evening pix in the pavillion.

Then, it was on to a nice campfire, stoked by Fubar Guzzi.

Around 11pm a thunderstorm blew through, sending us all to our racks.  Then, a light rain most of the night.

Sunday dawned beautiful, but a bit foggy.  Perfect opportunity to snap a few pix around town, so I hopped in the Suburban and headed out for an hour, or so.

This is the bridge that the concrete rainbow arch bridge replaced.  Before this bridge was a ford near where I'm shooting the photos.

Back in the days when cattle were transported by rail, cattle rancher, Mr. Hewins, was influential enough to get a rail spur run through the area.  The stockyards were at his ranch a few miles away, but there was service through Cedar Vale, the rails just kissing the southwest side of town.  Today there is a pretty big feed mill there, but some of the vintage buildings still exist alongside the more modern structures.  The rails were pulled up decades ago.

The tracks ran right in front of this old warehouse.

A friend was there to greet me.

Old elevators.

More neighbors greet me.

After this excursion, I went back to the campground and visited with the folks that were still there, packing up.  It was beginning to rain.  Again.  So I headed out, but before I turned back Eastward, I had one more bridge to score.  This bridge is on the Cedar Vale - Grenola road, a few miles North of Cedar Vale.

Cute little farmhouse along the way.

Then eastward toward home.  One more planned stop was just east of Peru at the Midland Brick Factory ruins to pick up a souvenir for Red, who couldn't make it to the NAR this year.

And now she has another for her collection.

Despite the rain, the NAR was a success.  Good location, good food, good friends.  Thanks to contributions, 50/50 drawing, and t-shirt sales, the Cedar Vale NAR was able to donate some money to the city to help with maintaining the park, and make a contribution to WildGuzzi.  And for those things, I would like to thank Dusty (oldbike54) and Doug (delrod).  It's events like this that really make the Guzzi community.

"You could've been there".

It was great meeting you Jang. Feel free to PM me anytime and we can swap music interests. What you herd on my ipod was a small sample of my music likes. Hope to see you again at a future Guzzi event. Safe travels

Rod

Here is an update from the Riding Dutchman.

After landing at LAX, where I was greeted by jdgretz and taken to his home to meet the family and then out for an Italian dinner, I got to the AirBnB I found nearby and slept like a baby until the next morning around 8. JD picked me up and I got the bags strapped on the bike. We rode a mountain road to Palmdale together, had lunch and then said goodbye, as he was turning around to get back home and I continued to Joshua Tree Village, where I stayed in a nice little motel. The next day I toured around Joshua Tree park and spent the rest of the day checking out this small village and doing much of nothing.

After 2 nights in the motel I took to the road again for a long stage that took me through a tiny place called Paradise, then I went beyond Hope and took my Guzzi straight through Congress on my way to Jerome, a lovely artist's village in the mountains high above Sedona. I passed around Sedona as it was already getting late and I have been in that tourist town before. I was greeted with my host for the next two nights in Southern Flagstaff. The next day was spent without any riding at all, but with a lot of nice talks and playing guitar together with my host.

Then it was time to move on and I rode another long stretch to Silver City. The ride there was beautiful, with long sweepers through gorgeous scenery. In Silver City I has another AirBnB booked and this turned out to be a lovely place to spend two nights. My hostess even took me to a hot spring in the mountains and we spent a lot of time taling about Life, the Universe and Everything. Again, there was a guitar on the premises, so I could practice a little more. And yesterday I arrived here in Albuquerque, where I am staying in a friend's house. The ride from Silver City was not as pleasant as the stages before, because of the strong head winds, which made the riding harder and the noise of the wind deafening.

Today was another day of resting and doing some work on the computer, just like tomorrow.  I am planning to leave for Clayton, New Mexico on Thursday and then ride the last section to Cedar Vale on Friday. The weather forecast is not particularly good, so I am keeping an eye on it and might decide to postpone my arrival in Cedar Vale by a day if conditions are really going to suck. The road is going to be mostly straight and boring and I do not want to make the experience worse than it needs to be. But I will be getting to Cedar Vale in any case, as I need to hand my bike over to StormTruck before he drops me at Wichita airport on Sunday.

So far this has been a nice trip and I am looking forward to meeting a bunch of Guzzi riders at Cedar Vale. See you at the end of the week.

Hi there fellow Guzzisti,

It was fun to be at such a nice informal Guzzi meeting. Of course the weather could have been better, but the company was great. Interesting to see how all differences in political or other views on life are easily overcome by the common craziness of wanting to ride one particular brand of motorbike. We do share some strange kind of craziness, I guess.

My EV has now safely arrived in Iowa (at least, I hope so), so that the license plates finally make sense.

Am I going to be back at a future Cedar Vale NAR ? I really don't know. Not if it is the only reason to travel to the US (unless I strike gold in my back yard and never have to worry about any amount of money anymore, but that chance is close to zero, given the swamp history of Amsterdam). If I do my best I might find an excuse to travel to Kansas next year but don't place your bets on it.

Thanks for all the nice talks, the food, the drinks and the company. I will wear the Cedar Vale NAR T-shirt to Dutch Guzzi events with pride.

Ciao

We are safely back to Iowa, the plates are in their home state for the first time since issuance, and we had a great time in CV. Well maybe not so much the overnight weather, but even that failed to dampen the good times. It was great to finely met you Jang, and all the people I had never met before.  We WILL be back for the 4th Annual CV NAR and eating symposium.  :drool

It was great to put faces to names: Oldbike, Amgeneral,Delrod, Stormtruck!

Just a few observations and thoughts regarding the CV NAR .

1 We are a hardy lot , not mean or aggressive , but tough and self reliant .
2 The folks of Cedar Vale are truly welcoming and friendly .
3 The nice Australian lady running the restaurant is funny and smart , Aussies are everywhere  :D
4 'Truck's Centauro is obviously a Chuck in Indiana tuned model , WOW !
5 The Eskimo Spy and his lovely wife Gail are pretty cool  ;-T
6 Jang represents his native Netherlands well . Do you know why the Dutch are all tall ? Because all the short ones drowned  :D
7 Chet is a great conversationalist , way too smart for me to keep up with .
8 Ditto for my partner in crime Delrod .
9 CJ 750 always has a surprise .

More later . If you have any observations re the NAR , please share , was pretty busy cooking and missed out on a few things .

LowRyter, I hope you were able to resolve your fifth wheel problem quickly and inexpensively. I owe you a box of your choice of cigars.  After two nights in the tent during thunderstorms, putting them up and taking them down,  loading two bikes, and loading the truck, Lorraine was eyeing your Toy Hauler. On the ride back she said that maybe we need to get one.   We found an 03 26 footer with a slide out  for $6500.  Haven't seen it, and will believe it when we bring it home, but you and your bride sparked "Lorraine's" idea to get a toy hauler.  :bow :D

Dusty, Delrod, great food, and a great time had by Lorraine and I.   Please confirm our reservations for next years CVNAR. :bike ;-T

Jang we really enjoyed meeting you, and hope to meet you again.  We certainly have plans on getting to your fair home country and partaking of you and your brides hospitality.

Chet, thanks for taking the Cali for that diagnostic spin.  I'll be doing a TB balance, pet cock mod, and loctite the rotor bolts.  You said to use red loctite right??? ;) ::)

Rocker, great to get to chat with you, and outstanding work on the photos.  Nice barn owl photo.  Any owl in a barn is a barn owl to me.  :D

Fubar, hope the vert got you back to the big city in Nebraska.

Gary, Loretta, it was great having breakfast with you.  Enjoy them oysters Loretta!! :food  I damn sure did!!

Bill, Gale, hope you had a great trip back home, wonderful meeting you.

To those that I missed naming by name, it was great to meet you, but I am horrible with names. Please take no offense at my failure to recall your name personally.

I met so many great people that I can't recall your names.

Dusty, how many days to the CVNAR???   ;D
