V7R headlight won't work...
« on: February 17, 2016, 07:50:19 AM »
Hi all. Headlight on '13 V7R isn't working. It WILL work on the pass button (high beam) with engine off or running,  but won't light up as normal when engine running on high or low beam. Everything else electrical is working fine. I've opened up the left hand switch and cleaned it up, checked all fuses. How does the bike turn on the headlight once the engine is turning? ECU? Or sensor somewhere? All help gratefully received.

MrKitty,
Look at the wire diagram and trace it back to a likely switch or joint.  Sorry, I can't think of a a quicker answer.
The wire diagrams are available online, from a variety of sources.  I can send you one later on today.

Burned out low beam element?
Replace the bulb. If problem fixed great.
If not you have a spare bulb for later.

Thanks Jeff, I've tried a different bulb, no joy.

So after a bit more poking around I find three relays to the right on the frame under the tank...

First has 2 pale brown wires, 1 white and green, 1 yellow and purple.

Second has 1 red and brown, 1 blue and white, 1 red and green, 1 red and white.

Third has 2 red and green, 1 blue and yellow and 1 purple.

I've ordered a new relay (all three are the same 30A 4 pin) so I can swap them out to check, but does anyone know whether any of these, and which one, control the headlight circuit after startup?

I went through the same headlight problem with my Griso a year or so ago.  I swapped relays because the Griso's are all the same also.  Funny thing is after swapping the relays everything worked.  I swapped back and they still work.  I attribute the relay working to the fact that I have a spare under the seat...just in case.

I'm going through much the same problem with my G11 oil pressure sending unit. It's the bad electrical connection to the unit that's the problem.  I figure the next time I pull the fuel tank I'm going to "belt and red suspenders" the electrical connection.

Found this which appears to identify the relays:

Sorted! A dead relay, one of the three, on my bike the one nearest the rear, 2 brown, 1 white/green, 1 yellow/purple. That's the relay that controls the headlight dipped and main beam with engine running.
