convert clutch adjustment
« on: April 08, 2024, 01:58:57 AM »
When adjusting the convert clutch it is 30 mm from the rear of the cable mount on the gearbox  to the inside circumference of the lever where the cable nipple sits but is that measurement taken with the lever compressing the counter return spring  so that the thrust race is just touching on the pull rod or with the spring relaxed in what would be the normal travelling position . hope I made myself clear there   Thanks Ray

The manual is vague with this adjustment and does not say that you compress the spring under the lever or leave it relaxed when measuring , guess Ill have to try both and see which works the best

I had similar questions when I was adjusting my clutch lever.   I decided to use the 30mm measurement and applied it thusly: from the case to the inside radius of the clutch arm (where the cable end rests).  The spring was lightly compressed at this point.

I haven't readjusted the the clutch arm since and the action, though feeling rather vague at the lever, seems to work just fine.

Hopefully someone with a little more experience can chime in and clarify if you (or I) are on the right track.

The picture in the workshop manual shows a bare transmission on its end assuming no pull rod insitu and the arm all the way towards the trans case so is it adjusted before assembly gearbox out on the bench like the manual shows  , I cant find where its adjusted in the bike with a clutch in place but like you chad my clutch has freeplay and works OK but I think I can do better but by the absence of replies you and i arent alone in this mystery

I've never worried about the 30 mm dimension - just adjusted the clutch so that it worked and had some freeplay.

Slack is all that counts…it’s an on/off  ‘clutch’…no friction zone for pulling away

I had clutch cables with out the side stand cut out switch…and could never get that to measure out any possible way to get to the spec…
