V7 tank on V9 Roamer ?
« on: July 10, 2018, 10:16:38 AM »
I was considering the purchase on a new 2017 Roamer, but I would like to install the larger gas tank from a V7.  Is this somewhat easy to do, or does it involve complex brackets and welding etc ... ?

IIRC Todd at Guzzitech did this, and I don't THINK he had to modify anything for the tank itself.

Now he went further and replaced the lower frame rails or something like that to also move the controls to the same position as the V7.

I'm pretty sure there's a sticky threaad on Guzzitech (which is where that one pic comes from).

IIRC, that was the first year V9 that he did that on.   The later ones had foot controls further back than the originals, though, not as far back as the V7, it might be good enough.

There is still the issue of the wheel and tire size differences, but, if that isn't a deterrent, go for it!

Keep in mind, that you'll may have to buy a fuel cap, fuel filler trim, and a fuel pump assembly as well (fuel pump, plus the removable part  part of the fuel tank that it mounts too), as that is likely to be different, and the V7 fuel tank, if purchased new won't have it.

It might be worth seeking an undamaged used tank from a salvager that includes these parts.

The real question is, do these have much more punch than a V7?

A Cali rider mate rode a Bobber over Europe - he was impressed by the engine, not so happy with the range in the fue tank, so if you are contemplating a V9, changing over the tank would be positive. Having the greater range is definitely more convenient. I've done it with the V7 Classic, and along with the tank, it required a different fuel pump, the tank cap surround, and new fuel lines. The fuel pump from an injected Nevada is the same as that on the metal tanked V7s, the tank cap surround is the same as that on all the Nevada's & I think the Calis. The V9s are not so common, so I haven't checked. I don't know if you would need to change the brackets on the frame for the tank or the seat - possibly, but it would be worth the effort. A bit of research is necessary - find someone who has one, or check with your local friendly dealer. There has to be someone around who has done it  who will talk to you - keep looking on the net and asking around.

A proper V7 tank would be both an esthetic and functional upgrade over the stock V9.  Clearly, a swap is possible.
