Did a 5 day 1750 mile scenic ride on the Road Glide
« on: November 20, 2021, 11:59:02 AM »
With the used bike prices being so high I was considering cashing out of my Road Glide Special.

I decided that before I do that I should take a nice ride to make sure I wouldn't miss it, because if I sell it, I will never again replace it.  Retirement is in the 2 to 5 year plan and spending that kind of money on a motorcycle again isn't in the retirement plan.

I rode the length of the Natchez Trace from north to south.  Then headed east to Tallahassee, Florida.  Then followed the coastline back to Fort Walton Beach, before heading for home.  All riding avoided interstates and the truck traffic that they are known for.

Here are some of my favorite photos.  The Lighthouses.

Just sold my Streetglide to my good friend from NY. No regrets as it WAS bought for my wife and I to ride. Turns out she don't ride enough to keep it and it ain't my cup of tea.
Did the Natchez on my old BMW years ago. Nice road!!

Glad to hear you're keeping it! I sold my Road Glide Ultra this spring (too heavy) and replaced it with an R1200RT (which I like a lot better).

But I do not believe there is a more comfortable long-distance bike made than a Road Glide and its variants. The BMW is more than 300 pounds lighter and much easier to handle for me, but I suspect not quite as comfortable on a trip (which I haven't done in years). On the Road Glide, you hit the cruise and listen to tunes and relax!

Two wheeled car.

That leans through the curves.

When I got my first street bike, the Yamaha XS750 with full touring accessories, my friends asked me what it was like to ride behind the windjammer type fairing.  I told them it was like being in my Triumph Spitfire with both arms out the window.

I could have ridden my KLX300SM on that ride in warmer temperatures but I wouldn't have had as much fun.  The roads where the KLX300SM are fun are roads I wouldn't want to ride the Road Glide.

Same goes for the Moto Guzzi V7III and the Suzuki Van Van 200.  Right bike for the ride.

All of the bikes in your signature look like they kinda fulfill the same purpose.

Sounds like it was a nice trip !   I hope the weather was dry for ya.

So , do ya think the little RE would make such a ride on a trip like that ?   I'm referring to avoiding the Super-Slabs and enjoying the back roads .

Weather averaged the mid 50s.  Ranged from 42 - 70 degrees depending on day and location.  A lot of shedding layers as the ride progressed.

Zero Rain.  One of the advantages of riding solo is the ability to adjust the ride schedule based on the weather.

Absolutely!  I would get it full broke in before such a trip though.  Once I adjusted the valves a couple times the engine would freely rev to 6000 rpms with every shift if I desired.  I do miss that bike.  I may buy another one, but want to test ride a CRF300Rally first.

Five Days , is a long time .
What?  That's not even the blink of an eye.
I still miss having a big touring Harley.  Still think there's nothing like one for seeing "the USA" from the seat of a motorcycle.  Sold my 2012 Road Glide Ultra a few years ago.  Just couldn't handle the weight any longer.  That and it was the only Harley I ever owned that was troublesome.  Developed a loud lifter tap in the middle of a trip out west.  I mean really LOUD...like shaking a can of Rustolium spray paint!  I and my riding buddy nick-named it "Tappy"  It also developed a weird hot-idle problem where it would stagger and sometimes die at a light.  Spent a lot of money to get all that fixed and then unloaded it.  Went from a Harley to a BMW K1600b.  Nice, but like all multi-cylinder bikes, just a fast sewing-machine.

Tappy:

My 2013 Road Glide Ultra developed the lifter tap at around 20K miles - fixed under warranty - and at 68K now never reappeared.  A friend's 2012  also developed that problem much worse on a cross-country ride (mileage unk) & got an entirely new engine under warranty - the dealer gave him a loaner so he could continue the trip & then swing back to the dealership to pick up his own bike & ride it home.  He put about 6K miles on the loaner before he brought it back - no complaint from the dealer. That's dealer service!

I love my Ultra & find that I can enjoy riding on just about any paved roads I've ever encountered - I don't need to be going double the speed limit on curvy roads in order to "enjoy" them.  Unpaved roads, however, are a sphincter-clinching experience, especially when I was loaded with a passenger & fully packed for 2 for cross-country trips.  Unfortunately, I'm one of the many on this forum who are "ageing out" of the big, heavy bike market.  I'd like a smaller & lighter sport tourer, but my wife is resisting, having gotten spoiled by the Harley tourer comforts.

Purchased my 2004 RG new. Just hit 102k miles this Fall. Other than a flat tire, never left me stranded, even on the way to the town of Circle, Alaska.
I was planning on selling it but no one with intent to purchase responded to my craigslist ad. One guy was trying to help me out thinking there was a typo in the mileage the ad stated. Agree with the issue of weight. Either its getting heavier or I'm getting older.

I asked a similar question on a BMW board, how does one get rid of a high-milage (very high, in your case) motorcycle? I usually have trouble finding a buyer when a bike has 30,000 miles on it.  So many out there for sale with far less.

You take what you can get, or you just keep it.  Service records always help.  A coworker of mine bought a high mileage accessorized R1150GS for $5k.  He enjoyed the heck out of it.

My 6 year old 60,000 mile Vulcan Voyager got $10500 trade in at the Harley dealer and they sold it within a week.  New leftover ones were going for around $14k, but Harley didn't know that.

My neighbor sold his 85,000 Honda NC700X for the cost of all the accessories he had on it.

Keeping it isn't an option, or I wouldn't be trying to sell in the first place!  I have a friend that says it's because I live out in the sticks.  "Why would anyone drive miles out to a small town when they can find 10 motorcycles just like yours in Atlanta or Nashville, etc?  He's probably got a point.

Maybe find someone to consign it with.  I know a shop in Columbia, TN and another in Decatur, AL that do consignment sales.

http://www.sgcustomcycles.com/

Sam is a real down to earth guy.  Old school motorcyclist.  I have never used them personally for a consignment so ask many questions.

Looks like they are using facebook mostly these days like many small businesses.

He has personally restored / repaired some bikes for Mike Wolf of "American Pickers".

Cool shop to visit and explore.
