Looks like it had the dreaded crinkle finish paint recall to replace the crankcases.

Only the 02s had the engine paint issue and after 20 years I wish my Stone engine paint looked that good. Though the 40L bags and racks as compensation more than made up for having to powerwash and touch up the engine every 5 yrs or so. :)

The V11 Lemans is probably the only bike I would give up my Centauro for. Heck I think that exhaust came with a chip and was a pretty expensive option ($1000 ?)

Like Jim (just) said.. only the 02's had that paint.. but LP is right, it looks like it has been apart.
Probably could be bought for 4K, and is a bargain at that price. The titanium exhaust alone is $1000..

Ok what am I not seeing regarding the looks like it's been apart? Or am I just lusting too much to not see it?

Sounds like 4K would get it in the trailer, those bikes are really starting to go up in value in my area; Iirc that upward trend is starting to play out south of the 49th as well.

If there were no surprises, that could be a good buy (idk what the crinkle paint adds to the equation)

It looks like a crinkle 02 transmission with satin crank cases.
Seems like exhaust repair links were welded on in place of a rear crossover

What a crappy set of photo’s. The whole thing looks dirty, old and tired ( which it may not not be..).

Well when you put together the US year model criteria and the Italian model criteria and the confusion about how to categorise "left over" bikes from previous years  I personally come away rather confused with regards to exactly what "model year" means in the US. As I mentioned it looks like a bike that has either had the engine case recall OR had a replacement engine at some point. Could have had a new gearbox fitted at some point I suppose but who in their right mind would fit a "crinkle" gearbox without repainting it to suit the engine black.

sweet bike ZZ looks well taken care of, unlike this one   ah memories I'll never forget

of course you are correct it was a full ECU and regarding model years My 02 gas tank shows as an 80th anniv 1921-2001 and I think was sold as a 2001 in Europe.
