Bike died on 2nd day
« on: April 18, 2021, 05:51:01 PM »
Hey all,

While I enjoyed my V85TT Travel for the 1st day yesterday, I took it out today and after about a 90min, it sputted for a few seconds and then died. I tried starting it and it turned over but did not start. Had it towed home and reached out to dealer for tues opening.

I know MG bikes are known to be quirky but after 1 day of ownership??? No warning lights or engine links. Perhaps a slight winding noise later into my ride....

Sorry to hear that Dave as I know it’s aggravating. Hopefully it’s something simple and a one time incident 👍

Any chance its simply out of gas? When I bought my new 2012 V7R I specifically asked the salesman prior to leaving if the tank was topped off, YEP! I go the bike home rolled it off the truck rode around the block and the low fuel light came on.

Maybe hose came off of fuel filter, check fuses, water in fuel that's left in tank. Bad dealer set-up?

Like I mentioned, it has gas, no warning light come on, opened up and closed gas cap , it almost turned over but not quite, sounded like a faint metal on metal grinding sound?

That sucks and I know it’s annoying to have a broken new bike.  The warranty is for early failures. Hopefully it’s just something simple.

Are you saying the starter motor is no longer cranking the motor over? The sound you are describing could be the solenoid opening and closing attempting to close the contacts to engage the starter motor but failing too for insufficient voltage.

If so it's a bad battery or bad connection.

Could be battery want charging or could be damaged or there's a loose connection in the battery or charging circuit.

My vote also.

Third the electrical being a likely problem. If fuel the engine should at least crank. Check the battery terminals to start. I've also had brand new batteries fail upon installation - maybe you just got a bad one. If you have a charger or jumper pack try hooking that up and see if the system come on.

Just went out, popped off seat connections are all tight, fuses in place, bike cranks over and sounds like it wants to go, all gauges light up but like i said earlier, there is an ever so faint sound of what sounds like metal on metal....

the 4500rpm is just a break in warning i think not to exceed

If it's diagnosed as a 'bad battery' I doubt it's actually a bad battery. More likely that someone at the dealership may not have properly put the battery into service. Far too often someone at a dealership simply fills the battery, installs it and sends the bike out. That is the very definition of putting a battery into service improperly. The directions that come with a new Yuasa battery say to:
1. fill it (only takes 2 to 3 minutes)
2. wait 2 to 3 hours (this step allows the acid to be absorbed into the glass mat)
3. charge it fully
4. then properly install it.
Those who only do steps 1 and 4 are the issue, not the battery itself. Skip step 2 and/or 3 and you'll very likely have a 'bad battery' within a day or two of ownership.

Please let the forum know what the end result and the diagnosis is.

That sounds like the shift warning lights which are set at 4500 rpm for the break in period.

Ok so the starter motor is functioning, it is cranking the motor over, yes?

What does "sounds like it wants to go" mean?!? Does it sorta catch and sputter or are does it just turn over and over without any signs of combustion?

If it's the latter, have you opened the tank to look for signs of an open fuel hose/filter? That is open the tank and watch while you turn the ignition on/set the stop button to run. If you see turbulence in the fuel while the pump runs you likely have a mechanical fuel delivery problem. You can also watch for this while cranking the bike with the starter motor.

Otherwise we still don't know whether it's fuel or ignition.

But it sounds like it is NOT battery/charging.

During my first long ride on my Norge, I discovered the bike had a faulty fuel level sensor. Ran out of gas on my way back down Mount Rainer with gauge showing 1/2 tank. Was almost at the top and heading down, coasted all the way down and to the flats, and pulled off.

Being that the bike cranks (starter engages) and all the lights come on and cycle, have you checked and confirmed you have fuel? Also, when you turn on the key does the fuel pump run? I wouldn't worry about the 'metallic' sound Guzzi's make all kinds of weird sounds.

 Crank angle sensor ?
Maybe the grinding noise. Have you had a look to see if you have spark ?

Is this is a new bike purchased from a Guzzi dealer? If so, I’d be tempted to let them troubleshoot it.

He's going too. But the dealers is no open on Sunday. While I'm all in on let the dealer handle it but if was something simple like a loose battery terminal or out of fuel that got me and my new bike up and running I go for it.

Agree. Quick at-home trouble shoot of the obvious stuff. If it's not staring you in the face get it to the dealer as they may have messed something up. Any attempted fixes beyond loose wire or no gas may impact a warranty claim and you don't want to give the dealer any excuse to pass blame.

Yes, good luck, and after reading all this, I suspect something simple, but please let us know what caused this irritation... :thumb:

Lit out of Georgia to New York on my brand new Yamaha.
She was dead on the side of the road at 3am in Ohio!
Cop comes by, calls Flat bed truck, takes me to motel near a Yamy dealer.
They trouble shoot and find fuel filter gunked up. On the road later that day. Oh,well. Another motorcycle story to tell.. :boozing:

Dealer picked up my bike, enroute back to shop. Curious once they hook up to computer what the fault will be.

Stay tuned...
