V85 keys
« on: April 22, 2021, 10:16:59 PM »
I would like to get a spare key for my V85tt.  The AF1 website offers spare keys, but refers to the need for an “immobilizer chip.”  Anyone know what that is, and why it would be necessary for a spare key?

Assuming it has to be programmed like any of the other Guzzi keys.
Did you not get two with the bike?

Yes.  But I suffer from lassiochemusophobia* and need more than one spare.

be very careful with your v85 keys.  the metal is very soft.  when you attach and detach the hard luggage, you must use the luggage key.  most of us have the keys on one ring.  it is very easy for the chipped ignition key to get down near the latch for the side boxes and get bent as you fiddle with the luggage key.  i have done both of mine that way.  i was able to carefully bend them back, but now, i am careful to the point of paranoia about them and always carry the second with me just in case the one i am using decides to bend again.  i don't think they have many bends in them.

What I'm seeing on AF1 is the OEM key blank with transponder for $66.
In the notes they state the key can only be added to your bike by a Guzzi dealer, although they offer a key cloning service for $40.
I haven't read through the manual to see if there is an option to add a key like there was on my 1200 Sport.

From the V85TT manual:

THE IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM CAN MEMORISE UP TO FOUR KEYS.
DATA STORAGE CAN ONLY BE PERFORMED BY A DEALER.
DATA STORAGE PROCEDURE CANCELS THE EXISTING CODES. THEREFORE,
IF A CUSTOMER WANTS TO PROGRAM SOME NEW KEYS, S/HE SHOULD GO
TO THE DEALER TAKING ALL THE KEYS S/HE WANTS TO ENABLE.

I assumed that a “cloned” key (what AF1 offers) would be the equivalent of a conventional non-computer duplicate, so that it would be usable without a trip to the dealer.  Is that not correct?

I would give them a call, anything else is just conjecture.

Yes, starting with the V7-III & the V85, only dealers can add a key.  This was probably due to somebody cracking the Cali 1400 code, and telling the world.  I wonder who that was?   :blank:

$40 is a fair price, it cost me a lot more here in Kiwiland.

all new OEM keys have random chip codes in them, and are set.  The chips inside cannot be reprogrammed.

You have to program the bike to accept new OEM chipped keys.  The immo is in the dash.    Some newer models like the V85,  this is dealer only and you MUST also know the user code.

Other models like Griso, Stelvio, Norge you can add OEM keys yourself, only if you know the USER code.  The user code is 00000 from MG but can be changed to anything.

A clone is a chip copy....we copy the working chip, burn a new one, use our own blanks, and cut the key.  No bike programming needed.  The bike thinks they are all the same key.

If you set a USER code away from the default 00000, DO NOT lose it.  If you lose the USER code and all your keys, you are in for a big $$$$$ deal (dash and lockset).

If you still have both original keys, you can recover or change the USER CODE.

If you don't know your USER code, and don't feel like guessing (no harm in trying all the easy ones), your only choice for spare keys is cloning.

I just purchased a 20 v85. I asked if my Jackal key would fit this ignition and they said it would. They just need to "add" the key to the program. we'll see??
