But the Classic is not. Not everyone has to ride the freeways/interstate to get somewhere (thank goodness).

Charlie, I know that you can't rely on a lot that you read on the internet, but I'm thinking (maybe more hoping) that the RE350 Classic is bound for the U.S.  Here is an article that hopefully is accurate:

https://www.hotcars.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-2022-royal-enfield-classic-350/

This article is from Sept '21, so maybe it was just wishful thinking.  We'll have to see what really happens as we get into 2022.

And back to the OP - I think the new BSA is a beaut and hope it makes it here too.  It would be nice to have a big 650 retro single before I have to hang up my helmet.  Mahindra huh!

looks nice....but the more I look, the more it seems like a caricature of the original with it's pudgy parts...

Are you talking about the Goldstar, or those of us reading this thread?

Either way, I agree with you!

Same size engine as the DR 650, but the compression ratio is much higher than the DR.  11.5:1 vs. 9.5:1.

Should be a torque monster. but it is also 100 lbs heavier than the DR.

Lower seat height should make it feel lighter.

Interesting that the retro Gold Star puts out 45 or so HP, where the retro Enfield single is only 29 or so.  I’d be tempted by the Gold Star.  Putting together a US dealership network, though, is a huge undertaking and I don’t see it happening.  Remember Motus?

Good point on the dealership issue, although RE seems to have handled it.  Re:  Motus - wasn't the starting price on that north of $30K?  That probably had a lot to do with their demise.

I had a Motus  dealer (multibrand HD, Ducati & BMW) less than 2 miles from my house and would have seriously considered buying one if it could be easily and cheaply made into a tourer - my wife would loudly protest the price if she couldn't comfortably ride on the back with me  :thewife:

The exhaust header appears too big, and there is something odd about the forks.  Liquid cooling, seems out of place.

I had an SRX600 as my first bike after passing my test in 1996. Mine was a poor example, the previous owner having mullered it a bit. If I could get a good clean one, I would love it as a second bike. BTW the bike that replaced it with me was an SZR660.......quite interesting bikes in thier own right.....

Skeptical Scotty,

I have thought since 1986 that the combination of the square tube frame and the organic (porpoise?) curves of the SRX gas tank made it an instant unique looking classic.  I think lack of electric start and relatively expense original price killed sales in the US.

The SZR660 is one of several bikes that were never available in the US that I have lusted after.  The TRX850 was another.  No doubt the SZR660 probably would not live up to my expectations, but I would still like to own one at least for a few months.

Practical Sportsbikes did an excellent article on a SZR660 that was heavily modified by one of their readers.  The same reader previously modified an SRX600 for an earlier edition of Practical Sportsbikes.

If you want a pdf file of the article on the SZR660 send me a PM.

Single cylinder bikes definitely have a unique flavor that does not appeal to a lot of riders.  Good for some of us, keeps prices lower.

Remember, in 15 years more or less, there may be no more new fossil fuel burning engines...Manufactu res have to consider this with the current new bikes and some may be less likely to dump a lot of development cash into a dying horse...
On the other hand, the last of the fuel burners could be quite the show...

That's partly true but it doesn't necessarily mean the end of combustion engines. F1 and others are already developing synthetic fuels that emit Zero emmisions. Expensive at the moment but economy of scale will see the price drop to affordable levels.

Toyota are investing billions in development of hydrogen hybrid vehicles, not electric. They are working hard to develop hydrogen fuel cells and will likely succeed.

Both fuels can be used in new and existing combustion engines with no emmisions. Give it time and we could still be buying bikes measured in BHP and not K/W/H.

And I love the look of the BSA and will be test riding one when available.

And if you're going to put a bunch of modern stuff on a "classic" bike, start with the rear suspension.

It's a 45hp 650 single, why liquid cooling?

Because they are planning higher performance versions and because emissions are getting harder to meet each year.

If it didn’t need ALL of that radiator and had a pipe with just a bit more hint of curves, it wouldn’t be half bad.

It's a 45hp 650 single, why liquid cooling?

It is easier to meet Euro 5 emissions with the more precise temperature control of liquid cooling.  The motor gets to operating temp more quickly, and operates at
a more controlled temp once up to temp.   The emissions systems are tuned for a narrow range of operating temp.

So  you have an air cooled car or truck?

I don't mean this to be "piling on" but properly disposing of any used antifreeze would eliminate the danger to the environment and cuddly animals.  For the record, I only have owned air-cooled bikes as well as a couple of old air-cooled VWs and, in principle, prefer air-cooled bikes.  However, in my previous life as a daily bike commuter on congested roads I sometimes wished my bike was water-cooled.  Nothing ticked me off more than getting stuck in a dead-stop traffic jam in 90+ degree weather 2-3 days after changing my oil, effectively halving (my inexpert estimate) the useful life of the new oil.  It would happen to me at least every other oil change.

As much as I lean toward air-cooled bikes, one simply can’t look past the difference that it helps with power. So fun to see thumpers putting out some power AND torque. Curious if the build quality will match the power hype. Overall this Goldstar certainly looks more polished than the 650 INT, IMO. Except that dang chubby exhaust. I’m sure a good aftermarket stainless steel pipe would look better.
