2018 Aprilia Shiver
« on: January 12, 2018, 08:21:51 PM »
Had a long look at the '18 Aprilia Shiver 900.  Does any WG person own/or has ridden this bike. I think it is just about the perfect naked, comfortable ripper.   In particular, how is the /by wire fueling?  Smooth or snatch. With good feedback, I would buy.  Great components, nice esthetics.

I saw this ride report on Apriliaforum.com. It compares the 900 Shiver to the 750's.

http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?339045-Quick-Shiver-750-vs-900-review

I'd like to ride one of the 900 Shivers to see how it compares to my '08 750.

I would certainly be interested in any feedback.  I have looked long and hard at the Aprilia twin for quite a while.  I want to love it.

Turn-offs for me that prevent buying (and I could be wrong about any of this):

Under seat exhaust.    Yeah, not good practical engineering in my book.  I want no hassle saddlebags.

Seems heavy for what it is.   I think the point of a sporty, naked twin is light weight.   Almost 500 pounds wet is not svelte.

Small gas tank.

The 750 Shiver I sat on was surprisingly tall.

"Nick", a member by that name on this forum has an Aprilia that he rode to the West Virginia rally last fall.  Send him a PM and ask him for his impressions.

Edit:  IIRC, Nick's bike was a Tuono (or something like that).  A naked, fairly upright seating, flat handlebars, not much weather protection, type of bike.

I always knew I'd get old.  How fast it happened was a bit of a surprise, though.

A Tuono is a race bike with lights and a more upright seating position. I was soundly spanked by one on the Snake..

I had a look at one last Saturday in the shop.  I really liked it, so i sat on it.  It did seem heavy - then i read a few reviews and found out it's 500 lbs.

Such a shame, as it looked top quality.  Hard to justify this over an FZ09.  If it was 50 lbs lighter...

The exhaust on the Shiver is very heavy. Put aftermarket cans and a lithium battery and it would loose a substantial amount of weight that is up high on the bike.

My '08 Shiver has the factory exhaust and a regular battery. I'm (still) working on mounts for hard side cases. The bike feels very light compared to my Breva 1100. And it turns easily. I've upgraded my suspension with Matris shock and fork cartridges. The suspension on the 900 is supposed to be better than the 750's.

The seat on the Shiver is fairly high but that gives great legroom. The bends for my hips and knees are so much better than on my Breva 1100. My son is about 5'10" and he has no problems with the seat height.

I flogged a 750 Shiver two years ago, and was impressed!  It went moved out fast, and handled very well.  Brakes and balance were great.  If I were in my 20s and could afford a new Italian bike, I would be very drawn to a Shiver.

A few years ago I rode a used '08 750. I almost bought it and I'm still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger.
I did not think that the bike was all that fast, but I don't need fast anymore...well maybe a little bit. It was fast enough for me.
I really liked the way the Shiver handled. It felt very smooth and competent.

That picture doesn't show the really wide (ugly) radiator.
Sure it has good ergos and a 32" high seat, but a little heavy, 30lbs more than the Tuono 1100.
Is it for the canyons, touring, commuting, or all the above?

A Tuono is essentially an RSV4 with a more upright seating position and bars.   Feel no shame!

I sold Aprilias back when I worked at a dealership during the recession. The Shiver 750 was heavy, but had sweet handling and a greta feel. A good rider on that machine could keep up - or pass - anything in its class, though if against an equally skilled rider on a lighter bike he would have his hands full. But at least he wouldn't be part of the endless GSX-R parade...

I would encourage riding a Ducati 821 Monster before buying the Shiver.  A bit more expensive, but about 100 lbs lighter.
