NEW ADDITION TO POST, READ FIRST.

I liked the 130/90-17 shinko 230 enough to replace it with a new one at 7K miles!!  Best mileage ever on this bike with tires available currently.  The wear marks were just indicating replacement and I had 44K on the bike.  Also replace the front tire with shinko 230 as well.  The main issue with longer lasting tires for me is that manufactures with long wearing tires dont provide that fit the V7.  For the price I cant beat the 230 for the kind of riding I do.

Replaced my last low priced ($62) 130/80-17 which gave me really good grip and respectful mileage (6300miles, Half the mileage loaded for camping and hiway time). 

Just put a couple hundred miles on the Shinko 130/90-17 ($70)and I like how it handles and as suggested by someone here it completely fixed the speedo error!  It handles the road grooves with little wiggle and feels solid in the rain.  I am not a racer but get a little athletic a bit, it feels comfortable.  I think it will feel even better when I refresh the Shinko 230 front tire (12000milage) with a new one for the new riding season.

If you swap to this tire a few things,

First make sure you keep the card board spacers in the center of the tire until you change it have it changed.  If you dont the beads will sort of collapse and you wont be able seat the tire.  I had to prop the beads open real wide for a few days before they stayed open enough to seat.  Hope that makes sense??

Secondly, let the air out of the tire when you slip it between the swing arm and final drive.  Makes it slip more easily into place, Oh! that's what ___ said!  sorry made me giggle anyways.

I hope to do 5-6 k miles by the end of Sept.

Has any one else tried this tire?

 The 712 or the 230 rear . Yeah , both , like the 130-90 712 , slightly quicker steering , mileage is OK , just make sure the wiring under the rear fender is tucked out of the way . DAMHIK .

I prefer the tread pattern on the 230, will have to see how the rear will wear, the front wear is okay.   Ran the 712 on my Suzuki GT500, okay but wear was pretty fast both front and rear.

Please Check update at top of post.  Final follow up of wear test for tires available for the 2015 V7.  if  anyone knows of a tire that has better wear PLEASE let me know, I have been changing tires more often than oil changes and it is aggravating!  7K is better than my worse mileage of 3.5K!

I ran SDs on the 1000SP out in the Kalifornia Kanyons. About 3K miles did it, but I liked them. A lot.

I'm used to run nothing but Metzler's Marathons to a few years ago and switch to Shinko's and quite pleased.

Well, you asked for it. I have so far found the Avon AM26 the longer lasting, closely followed by the Pilot Activ. Here's a summary, in thousands of miles for you blokes across the water:-

FRONT
Lasertec - 10.6
Sport Demon - 17.5, 11.4, 11.3
Avon AM26 - 34.4, 31.8, 37.0

REAR
Lasertec - 10.6
Sport Demon - 9.9, 7.6, 5.2, 5.4, 6.3
BT45 - 5.8, 7.1
Avon AM26 - 11.7, 12.2, 12.9, 10,5, 8.0, 7.7, 11.2, 12.9, 9.7, 11.0
Pilot Activ - 12.1

Still a lot of variation, and no realistic explanation for the differences. These numbers are for the 2 V7s, and climate, road surfaces, tyre balance and rider style & input are going to be factors. I prefer, also, the Avon's handling characteristics to those of the others. But that's me. I still have a few other tyres to try out.

I have been a fan of Avons for years..AM26 are my favorites.

That being said use or try what you want. It's nice that we do have
many options to choose from!

I think the reason I dont get much out of the standard tires you guys run and and I have tried them all as well

 Lasertec, Sport Demon,  BT45, Avon AM26, and pilot Activ

Is because I carry a lot of stuff (heavy) when I go camping also do a bit of longer distance 70-80 mph?  At least half of the 44K since 2016 has been loaded for camping.









Wish Michelin made commander 2 rear tires to fit the V7, I get wonderful mileage out of them on my PC800, up wards of 18k miles. 

Malik that is amazing that you can get 12K miles on Avon/Pilot rear tires!  I wish the US would pave our roads with what ever you guys use down there, that is the only explanation I can think of???

I’m a very conservative rider and have never got 8k out of any tire on any bike, regardless of the bike size from full dressers to lighter cruiser types. I just put a set of heavy duty Shinko’s on the 1400 tourer and interested is seeing what they turn out mileage wise.

Luggage? I do a lot of long trips, and manage to keep the weight down to around 30 - 40kg, including tools, spare parts, camping equipment (incl 2 stoves & the wok, coffee pot & grinder), clothes. Usually closer to 30kg. Touring on the 1100 Sport taught me to keep the weight down - there's not many options there.

10k on a rear was always a benchmark for me. Used to get that easily out of Metzeler Marathons (bias ply ME88's) on the rear of Harleys and maybe the Jackal.

It's still the goal in the newer 880/888s.

But I've fallen shy on radials and some of the stickier bias plys like the Sport Demon.
