Just starting to see the equipment out in the fields around here. It's been drier and colder than normal...but the rain will come...

It's still a little early here.. normally the second or third week of April for corn. Depends on soil temperature, of course, and our "Spring of deception" lasted quite a while.

Not only is the equipment size and speed amazing but last fall he tilled the future rows and deposited fertilizer in "rows". Each row is about five inches wide and the open dirt in-between the rows is not disturbed or fertilized. Now in he comes today and the tractor auto-steers so that the planter drops the seed in the middle of those rows. The accuracy of the combination GPS and local electronic signals give a final accuracy of an inch. Now any guesses on how much money is rolling in that picture?

Uhh, yeah.  Back in the day, the old man and I would start plowing, discing, dragging, etc. in April. We would normally finish planting the beans on Memorial day.  Now, our farmer pulls in, and 4 hours later.. he's done. (!) He is much like an airline captain.. just there to monitor the electronic gizmos..

We generally plant a combination of corn, wheat and soybean.

Well... that could be considered a down payment or deposit. Hint, the tires alone on the tractor would be at least 20K.

Our daughter's farmer boyfriend along with his brother have about 750 acres in central Ny state.
They own a newer JD corn harvesting machine, cost $350k used....Looks huge to me...Last year while harvesting the rear wheel cam off, a huge axle casting failed...A $20k repair he claimed. They have some of repair insurance that paid for most of it.
Looks like the farmer who leases my field is doing hay again....
