Cheap V85TT inner fender
« on: April 10, 2021, 07:42:51 PM »
Lots of folks have noted that the high front fender on the V85TT offers little to no protection from road spray. My first ride on a wet dirt road totally covered the engine in mud. I considered the Caponord fender and Pyramid Plastics deflector but decided to do my own thing.

I bought this China rear fender skirt on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Motorcycle-Rear-Fender-Wheel-Splash-Guard-Cover-Motorbike-Mudguard-ATV/143679868602 for $23.

Used the U-brackets to make 4 short tabs I bent to 100 degrees then fitted to the caliper bolts. The material is about 2mm so I don't think it will affect bolt retention. Just to be sure I used blue thread lock and torqued them to spec. Things are a little clunky as I only have hand tools - a drill press and grinder would have made for a better result but you don't really see things.

At first I had the brackets pointing up but that was too much of a gap and the fender hit the skid plate. Reversing them to point down made for a much better fit. The end result looks decent enough and is very effective at keeping things cleaner.

That’s pretty darn good.
Although the look is an acquired taste, that is more than overcome by the indisputably good protection it affords.

Yeah, not the prettiest thing but I was looking for function over form at this point. Would rather protect the bike on the dirt/gravel roads I intend to frequent more with this style bike.

Within a day or so of seeing this, I ordered one. I'm sick and tired of cleaning off road tar and believe me the paint from the double yellow lines doesn't come off. It can't hurt as a flat tire deterrent either. It got here yesterday. not sure of exactly how he did the brackets but after trying to figure out a way to make the ones that came with it work I started cutting. Basically I

snipped off the sides and drilled out the end hole so the bolt for the calipers would fit then opened the end so they slide over. making a 90 degree or so bend at the end and there you go. Nice and sturdy.

If I was taking my V85 anywhere serious, I’d copy that idea and bugger the looks for the trip.
Very good work IMO... :thumb:

Better than $100 plus shipping for the British version. Plus the gap is adjustable.  :thumb:

Nicely done Vagrant. I basically did the same thing - used a section of the provided mounting bracket to fab 4 tabs and enlarged the one end to fit the caliper bolts. I have the brackets facing down so the fender sits closer to the tire. Too much of a gap and it will hit the front of the skid plate.

UPDATE: here's a a close up of the brackets I made.
