Motorcycle prices
« on: June 23, 2021, 09:32:17 AM »
I read an article a few days back saying used car prices are up nearly 30% since a year ago. New car inventories are way down due to supply-chain issues, so I assume new car prices are up as well.

I look at what motorcycles are for sale on Craigslist everyday, usually 3+ times a day... I'm addicted. Anecdotally I would say used bike prices, (not Guzzi's for some reason), are up similar (20-30%) compared to recent years. Not sure about new bike prices.

My question: Where do you think used bike prices will be in 2023 (two years from now)?
  - Prices will drop to where they historically reside, 20% less than where they are at now.
  - Current prices will be maintained.
  - Prices will continue to go up.

My guess is that post-- demand will return to normal, the supply-chain for everything will allow new-bike mfg'ers to pump out enough bikes to meet demand, and many of the 'new riders' of today will look at their new (to them) bikes in two years and will question, "Why do I keep that bike that I have put 100 miles on in the last 2 years?"... and all of that will result in prices of used bikes dropping back to where they normally reside, i.e. 20% lower than they are today. That's my guess.

So what's your guess?

I think they will drop back to 'normal'

I bought a farkled out DR650 in fall of 2019, put a couple hundred miles on it, decided I hated it.... dropped it twice, and broke some stuff, put zero money into it...  I sold it in early spring of 2020 for +15% more than I paid for it! If I had realized what was going on with demand for powersports stuff, I would have sat on it for a month or two and tried to profit a grand off of it.  As it went, I just sold it to the first guy who hit me up on ADVrider..  After I made the deal, I had almost a dozen buyers emailing me, offering above asking price. Oh well, c'est la vie

I have a soft spot for Sportsters so I look at used ones in the local Deals and Wheels. Used Sportster prices have gone through the roof. What used to be a $4,000 bike now have asking prices in the $6 to $7,000 range. Of course the fact that HD is discontinuing them may add a bit to this.

The market has been strong but there were also deals to be had. I ended up buying more bikes last year than I have in quite a while.

In my opinion the market is already showing signs of slowing as people are getting back to a more normal work week. Sooner than later i believe the pendulum will swing the other way and all the toys people bought over the last year out of boredom will be flooding the secondary market when they realize they aren't not using them or cannot afford them.

I actually bought my Guzzi just 3 months back. It was probably the first time my insomnia paid off (I wake up around 1:30 and doom-scroll through c-list and other crap on my phone). A guy posted a 2015 V7 for $3k around 10:30pm that night. I woke up at 1:30, as normal, and sent an impassioned email saying I would come that next evening and how I've been looking at Guzzi's for a few years. Also, I had the cash in hand because I went to buy a CB1100 the week before and it was sold out from under me (different story). When I picked it up that night the guy said he had around 20 people email him about it that day. Thank goodness I woke up when I did AND was able to pick it up that day AND I had the cash on hand.

In my opinion the market is already showing signs of slowing as people are getting back to a more normal work week. Sooner than later i believe the pendulum will swing the other way and all the toys people bought over the last year out of boredom will be flooding the secondary market when they realize they aren't not using them or cannot afford them.

I hope so. I tried to buy a new go-kart for my kids a few months back. Twice I confirmed availability with a phone call. Twice I placed the order. Twice I was notified it was backordered. I ended up buying them a little Chinese quad off of c-list and they are happy.

People coming outta the plandemic, spring fever, and inflation are causing prices to rise. Also the availability of the give away money from the govt.  When that cheese dries up, hopefully things will level out. IF they monkey around with the minimum wage, more prices will rise.  It all has an effect.       Somebody on TV, (SNL?) did a comedy skit where a lot of folks made a bunch of money from reparations. "In today's news, sales of the Cadillac Escalade have gone through the ROOF! AND, more than 10,000 new record labels have been launched!"
