NGC Classic wooden boats
« on: June 26, 2021, 07:36:14 PM »

I was at a concert last night on the grounds of our local boat museum, some of the boats were available for viewing. Including one that I didn’t know they had. The only existing helicopter boat, I’d had a few beers so didn’t take real detail pics. I included a link to there site if your interested. The pics do not do these beauties justice.

Many years ago, I honeymooned at Carnelian Bay in Lake Tahoe...and always admired the GARWOOD series of classic wooden boats... :thumb: :thumb:   :boozing: :boozing:

My bro in law builds boats. Folks get mad when they try to hire him to build more and he refuses. He tells 'em he's retired now. Former master cabinet builder and contractor who loves boats and has some mad skills!

I have lived on Keuka Lake and been around boats all my life. One of the most intoxicating smells is freshly laid varnish.
We owned a 1956 21 ft Chris Craft Capri for many years. Boating is in my blood.

That looks like a fine museum in Minnesota. Many great boats there. I've been to the Lake Tahoe show at Sierra Boat works, the museum at Alexandria Bay, and now the Finger Lakes Boating museum in Hammondsport, NY. If at Alexandria Bay, be sure to take in the boat Thunderbird. Wow!

It is a real head scratcher as to why Hollywood has not made a movie about the life of Garfield Wood, AKA Gar Wood. He invented the dump truck mechanism and made a fortune. Which allowed him to pursue his first dream building outstanding mahogany boats. Hell of a story.

kk

These are on display at The Legacy of the Lakes Museum in Alexandria Mn ( west Central Mn ) about 70 miles  south East from Fargo and 70 miles northwest of St.Cloud Mn on I 94 )

2 years ago the back room was devoted to the Gar boats I think they had 6 of them on display and several motors and drive chains on stands so you could see them out of boats.

When Motörhead visitors come ( pre -) the museum is one of the places I include on my tour, especially if it’s raining. The museum is seasonal, closed from mid September to mid May usually, fortunately I know the people who built and run the museum and have had private self guided tours in the past. But it’s getting bigger and harder to do that now. Most of the boats are owned and were restored locally. It actually started with a few guys looking for a place to work on their boats together than evolved into a place for them to store them, several are taken out during the annual mid summer boat show at Arrowood Resort on Lake Darling, which usually has 80- 100 working wooden boats showing up.

The way the boats are displayed now, several have platforms around them with open engine compartments so you can check the guts out quite easily.

Foto the helicopter boat is a one off  concept boat Evenrude did to demonstrate where the future of boat design might go. Accompanying the boat is a nice display explaining the history. It’s pretty cool looking up close the front canopy slides back to enclose the four seat cabin.
This is a newer addition to the exhibit and is on loan, I don’t know how long it’s been here or how long it will stay.

If you want to drive your rig up to check it out I have a lot near my home with electricity and water, no sewer, you could park at while visiting the area. But be aware I have 4 Guzzi’s that might need tweaking and riding while your here.

I’d be willing to extend the same offer to other interested group members, the lot is almost always available but my schedule not as flexible so advance requests are highly recommended, and appreciated.

As one who worked on many famous boats (sailboats) one of my favorites is the motor vessel "Thunderbird" that is on Lake Tahoe. Check her out. But there are many beautiful wood boats throughout the the US and the world. One problem that I had was "champagne dreams and a beer budget".

I don't sail, but a friend told me : "A boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into". I imagine that a vintage wooden boat would be a particularly deep hole.

My dad had a mahogany Century inboard back in the 1960's. It was a great boat.  That one boat with the tail fins reminds me of the old "Supercar" marionette TV show!

Thats a ChrisCraft Cobra. VARY cool boat!!

Ive had a love for wood boats for the last 30 years. I tend to go more toward the workboats though. As far as I have gotten as far as owning one, is just building a few small plywood rowboats though. Working on a 10 footer now. Does not look like much [and its not...] but they are fun to build, and nice to row around in something you built yourself...

I'm talking about the white Evinrude outboard with the bubble glass and big tail fins.  Says, Heli-bout" on the stern, I think.  https://ibb.co/RgZmF89

My dad had a Century Coronado 21 we kept on the Lake of the Ozarks when I was a kid.  Wish I had a picture of it.  Here's one taken off the internet that is very similar to the one we had.  Sliding hard top. I still remember the sound of the exhaust at idle, the un-muffled V8 burble and then glub-glub as the exhaust ports went above and below the water line.

Wonder if it's a photo-shop?  The engine appears to be running, but no one is on board???

I'm guessing the rotor was only a mockup.

No quite real, just 2 blades though, I’m trying to connect with the former head of the museum to find out more of the history, and if they have pictures or perhaps newspaper story recording it’s flight. When I find out more I”ll post here hopefully with a link.

This is our old 1953 boat, the first of three built by my woodwork teacher.  A 12 footer. powered by one of the first OHV Honda 5hp engines to hit our shores.  The "pilot" sits on one side and steers with a tiller.  Power is transmitted via a V belt to a pulley which transfers the rotation by a chain encased in a bronze casting to a puller prop underneath.  The drive system was designed and built here in New Zealand by a firm called France Craft, probably the first to build fibreglass boats here in NZ, around 1955.  It is the only one I have ever seen, and it goes just great.  The boat itself is great for just ducking out for a quick fish up to about a mile from shore.  not very fast but a very stable fishing platform.
