California Rain Mode
« on: January 13, 2022, 07:23:26 PM »
I've yet to be caught in the rain with my California Touring. Can I get some feedback on performance in rain mode.

I had a 2015 1400 tourer.
The rain mode simply softened the response to the rear wheel.
That’s the most mechanical explanation my knowledge level can offer.

It basically softens the roll on so you don't break the rear wheel loose. You'll definitely notice the difference. It doesn't limit speed or RPMs, nor does it have any effect on the traction control mode that has been selected. It just flattens the acceleration curve.

2017 Moto Guzzi California Touring:

Rain mode definitely softens the acceleration, and limits top speed on the
highway noticeably.

From page 76 of the owner's manual:

"The system reduces the maximum torque supplied by the engine and smoothly delivers it so
as to prevent loss of traction. In this mode the motorcycle's performance is limited, and therefor,
the maximum speed cannot be reached."

Most of the time I run in Veloce, but I will change it to Turismo in the rain. I used the rain mode when
I first got the machine, but I don't think it's really needed. I don't notice a great difference between
Veloce and Turismo, but maybe I'm not trying hard enough.....

I leave the traction control in the least restrictive setting.

why don't you just put it rain mode and see for yourself?

Well there ya go...

I've only ever used it in the rain, when "maximum speed" wasn't a concern.

That's not entirely true....I've also used it in stop-and-go traffic on the grated lane of the Mackinac Bridge. A little bit of insurance as the clutch hand got tired. Glad to have it.

I used the rain mode once while on a trip with my daughter on back. We were riding the north eastern most part of Prince Edward island Canada along the coast heading north. It was late in the day and getting dark and was very foggy, we were very low on fuel, . There is not much up there and we had a ways to go before we reached any town with gas. I really  didn't think we would make it as we had been on the reserve light for almost 40 miles. I switched into rain mode and lugged along in fifth gear and we did make it to a station amazingly. I am quite sure that the rain mode will save on gas in a pinch if only because it reduces the massive roll on available in the other modes.  Saved our bacon that day. It would be interesting to do a more formal test of consumption in the three modes over a tank full. What a great machine over all for a road trip.
