Help me fix my headlight, I'm an idiot.
« on: June 02, 2017, 12:48:27 PM »
I decided to fix something that wasn't broken by putting in a new brighter headlight bulb in my '13 Racer. When I disassembled I took out both the bottom ring screw and the adjuster screw on the side of the ring. I installed the new bulb with no issue, but now I cannot figure out how to get the rest of the headlight assembled. I've searched parts diagrams but I cannot find anything that shows how the adjustment screw is supposed to be fit. There is a brass spacer that isn't shown on any of the diagrams and I don't know if it is supposed to go on the bottom screw or the side adjustment screw. I've tried both with no success. If I put the spacer on the bottom screw as shown in the photo, then the only way the assembly stays snug is if I tighten the adjustment screw so much that the headlamp is pointing WAY over to the left (also shown in photo). If I put the adjuster screw through the spacer, I lose all adjustability. In the meantime I'm going with electrical tape and pretending I'm going to a track day.How does this damn thing go back together?

This subject has been broached before, but not resolved.  See:  http://www.guzzitech.com/forums/threads/mystery-bits-inside-my-grisos-headlamp-housing.8593/

As you stated, the two screws and the brass spacer tube aren't listed or described in the part manuals.  Isn't there also a spring in there?

Does your headlight still have the 2 O-rings (part 883417) attached to whatever they're supposed to go onto?  If you can describe exactly where they are and how they fit, we could all benefit.

Sorry I can't be of any help here.

Thanks Sib. I didn't have springs or any O rings, just the spacer. I've tried threading the adjustment screw prior to mounting and tightening the assembly up and vice-versa but neither helped. At least your link did shed light on which screw the spacer is supposed to go. I can't believe I'm going to have to bring this to my dealer. I guess I should be happy I have one nearby.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Moto Guzzi Manuals. Try looking up the headlight schematic for an 84' small block, then look at the wires.

No, I won't say it.

The long Philips head screw & brass spacer (pic 5) go on the bottom - they  hold the lamp on the bucket after the top has been clipped under. You should be able to put the adjuster screw (the one in the side) back in before mounting the lamp. This one control late ral adjustment & it feels like there should be a spring (of some sort) in there somewhere. As long as you can get lateral control you should be fine. Vertical adjustment is controlled by the big bolts on the side that hold the lamp assembly on.

My fellow Racer buddy checked his light and said that there is in fact a spring to the adjustment screw, so mine must've popped out and I missed the flying object. So it's somewhere in my garage. Rather than spending an hour tearing that apart, I'm off to the hardware store to find a suitable replacement.

BTW the screw goes in the bottom hole first - the brass spacers goes behind that over the screw - then you fish for the threaded hole, trying not to have the spacer fall out again.

Found the spring on the garage floor, bought some new O Rings as well. Everything buttoned up, now just need to test alignment. Thanks for the help!

Pics?  Where does the spring go?  Where do the O-rings go?  Thanks for enlightening (pun?) us.

To summarize: If you want to replace the lamp, DO NOT remove the adjuster screw on the left side, only remove the lower screw. The spring is part of the adjuster, insert the machine screw threw the spring on the left side of the chrome headlight ring. The brass spacer belongs with the sheet metal screw on the bottom of the ring. The O rings or rubber washers are placed on either side of the spacer.

You're lucky. I've never seen washers on the bottom screw, not on either of mine, nor on any others. But come to think of it, rings to grip the thread & keep the spacer in make perfect sense. It would keep the spacer from falling out each time. Simple - and it won't even count as a mod.

Mine didn't have them either, I bought some at the local Ace Hardware. Cheapest upgrade to date!
