Hi Folks!
Heres a funny thing, in the 12 years or so Ive had my Jackal I never really thought the back brake was very strong, a real good stomp would hardly lock the real wheel.
I've been literally off the bike for a few months following an accident, in recovery. I put another disk on the front, and new braided lines and a new master cylinder (original for 1 disk only) and now have a pretty strong front brake. I discovered the rear line was slightly crimped, in fact ALERT TO JACKAL OWNERS, the rear brake line is cable tied to the swing arm so that its in the exact place where the end of the 'foot' of the main stand will whack it each time you roll off the stand, eventually crimping it. So I put a new braided steel line on and new pads, bled up in a treat with a power bleeder, BUT still weak as piss as we Aussies say! Good pedal feel but no real strong retardation. I don't think the callipers are rebuildable are they?
Any ideas?

im sure your calipers are rebuildable. ive rebuilt earlyer versions.

Usually rear calipers on late bikes like your Jackal have the bleeder at the bottom of the rear caliper while mounted on the bike. The only way I have had success bleeding them is to dismount them and suspend them with tbe bleeder at the top, insert something, wrench handle etc. between pads and bleed normally. They can also be back bled using a syringe to push fluid from the bleeder back to the master cylinder.

THX for the heads-up. My 2001 has plenty of rear brake but I'll look unsdr where the center stand hits to see what's going on.

The rear caliper is single-sided and must slide on pins to operate correctly. Check those pins for rust. Mine were seized solid and I had to drill through the bracket and punch one of the pins through from the inside.
The first symptom is weak brakes, second is one pad wearing more than the other. Mine kinda snuck up on me because I hardly ever use the rear brake except for starting on hills and such. By the time I found the problem it was a real mess.

A good thing, in my book. You don't really want the rear brake locking easily at speed.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Its great to know there are others who will spare a moment for a anothers problems. I think what Steve said is the most likely culprit ( also considering I have noticed differential pad wear) and so I'll soon have the caliper off again for a good look at the sliding components.
