Title: How to put a tacho on a V9?
Post by: Tomas0365 on March 20, 2019, 04:57:30 AM
If I've done my research right there is no facility on the V9's to incorporate a factory tacho.  How else could I go about setting one up?

Aftermarket, take ignition pulse signals from an ignition coil.

There used to be a relatively inexpensive digital one that was popular with Sportster riders.

I wonder how easy it would be to get something like this to work:

Or something like this:

I prefer an analog / dial tach to the digital but did use a Trail Tech unit on a Suzuki and it worked well. Tried an induction type dial tach from overseas and it was a POS - never worked and I was lucky to get a partial refund. Whatever you decide go with a name brand or you're just wasting time and money.

I vote for the Trail Tech TTO Kev listed.

Keep us posted if you look into it more, as it could be a nice solution for those smallblocks (V7 or V9) that don't have a tach.

Looks like the trailtech stuff has videos and downloadable instructions for their units on their website. I should take a look at that later today if I get a chance.

I have previously installed an tach similar to this one on a Kwaka I raced and will probably attempt to do it to the roamer.  I wanted to hang this question out there in case someone has already come up with a solution.
Will keep everyone updated though :thumb:

I would start here.
https://www.speedhut.com/gauges/

Speedhut let you design your own gauge, any coulor, any style, any font any pointer, any graphic you can imagine for about $150
A North American company with real customer service.
Make sure you ask for the program button that plugs in the back NOT the one through the glass and tell them its for a bike so they seal the bezel.
Best of all it's only 1" deep.
Don't forget the Eagle  :thumb:

Thanks Roy.

That"s just the sort of thing I was after.  It looks like I can design my own gauge (with eagle of course) that matches the factory one, then get a cable which I can wire into the can H and can L lines.  I figure it should be able to read the RPM that way as the OBD connection we use for guzzidiag enables RPM to be read.
I'll keep studying but that is a good supplier.  I googled 'aftermarket tacho" they didn't show up

I would have thought that they would use a common wiring loom, and there would be a plug ready to hook on to.

One thing i'm not sure about is how the Canbus addresses for the Tach works, obviously Speedhut sell lots but I would have to check if its available.
The meters are based on stepper motors, at first it was a bit disconcerting because when you turned the key off the tach stayed where it was but thats easy enough to get around.

Update
I did a bit of reading on Canbus, it's guaranteed to make your eyes glaze over, started back in the dark ages (early 80s) by Bosch.
Some device, probably the ECU throws up a message called "Engine Speed" and anyone interested writes it down so probably all tachometers are listening for "Engine Speed" and all speedometers are Listening for "Road Speed" etc. Of course the messages are not given simple names but it works something like that, the tach will look at the speed value and display it as a digital number or run the stepper motor up/down to represent it as an analog display.

Apparently modern autos can have up to 70 different devices yabbering away to each other over the same 2 wires.

Of course you can always use a conventional electronic tach.

The electronics for V9s and V7s are slightly different.  From what I have researched you can get a V7 Stone and add a tach as you have described, but no such plug exists for a V9, although you've just reminded me a of a small 2 wire plug I found yesterday.  Will have to investigate tomorrow as it is now dark and this bottle of shiraz needs drinking.

By the way am I slurring my words. :boozing:

for connecting a tach, just take one wire of the injector, not the one carrying 12 volt, the other one. That has a clean pulse. Easy for all aftermarket tachs. Taking the coil gives to much unwanted  spikes.

I think Canbus will have 5 Volts between wires.

oh gosh, I was trying to figure out why someone wants to put a taco on their motorcycle.

You could replace your (antiquated, troublesome, inaccurate) OE speedo with this Speedhut GPS unit that also has a built-in tach.  Dead - on accurate, no cable drives or wheel sensors.

Wait, this thread is about a V9. That's all facts not in evidence.

How come no one has mentioned the Guzzi multi media platform has a tach function.  I totally forgot about that option. :embarrassed:

Maybe because we had a whole separate thread on it a week or so ago.
