I have a few questions about exhausts on these old tontis.
First off I have a 77’ T3 with the low Bub exhaust, front crossover, etc. It’s a bit loud for my easy going zen cruiser. It looks like these pipes have never been repacked, would this quiet her down a bit? How much?
Next question, do all Tonti frames from this time use the same aftermarket exhaust? I.e. a G5 or SP1000 exhaust work and fit?
Last, is there a quiet exhaust recommendation?
Thanks as usual

The most quiet are the ones that came stock, stucci luigi with the tiny outlet hole. Ain't cheap.

Yeah, the Bubs can be repacked, and sound awesome.. unless they are the Milich special Rusty Bubs that have rusted so badly that you can't get them apart..
-
I’ll try to repack, if they aren’t suitable there will be a set of Bubs for trade.
Any recommendations on a rivet gun?

The Bub's on the CX are little loud, but I like it that way, The Lafranconi's on the LMIII are just sooooo sweet sounding :thumb:

My 87 LeMans4 came with Bubs, and they were LOUD! Over a time span of a year I repacked them three times before finally getting it right. First lesson - if using fiberglass, doesn't matter if it's the special stuff or home insulation, pack it really really tight. As tight as you can get it. I didn't notice any difference between the special stuff and the insulation for longevity or quietness. These guzzis put out a strong exhaust wave that's really hard on packing. They say that two cylinder sport bikes will need it more often - must be true, mine blew the stuff out pretty quickly.
Something else I didn't know - water trashes fiberglass packing. Another reason to go the route I did, which was:
Stainless steel wool. I got mine on line, fairly coarse stuff. But you can find a machine shop dealing with stainless and make a deal for their turnings. Wrap the perforated tube with fine stainless screen and tie it in place with some wire. Then really pack the steel wool in around it. I had some ceramic wool left over from the first packing, and put that on the outside.
Clean off all rust on mating edges and coat with silicone when assembling. That'll help stop the corrosion and will be easier to break loose than if they're rusted together.
It's been six or nine months and still sounds good. I think it's holding up this time. Love the sound!

If you're going to replace them, consider these: https://www.armoursltd.co.uk/product/silencer-moto-guzzi-t3-s3/

Charlie - I'm considering getting some Armour Silencers (hey, I'm even beginning to talk like them!)for the LM4. Any experience with those? I was going to get the Keihans originally, but after you posted about the Armours, took a look there.
I'm curious how they perform compared to the stock mufflers and the Keihans.
-
Keihans were much better quality than Armours in the past....no clues as to comparisons now
-
Someone mention loud ?
Mine are getting closer to being finished

No experience with any Armours silencers except those T3/Convert sets. Those are well made and sound good (just slightly louder than stock).
The only Keihan system I've installed was a complete exhaust for a V50 III - excellent quality, fit perfectly.
-
Thanks, Charlie. It's a tough decision - the Keihans are about $150 more than the Armours. And then they also have a Lafranconi copy for $100 more than that.
A friend restored a 90S about ten years ago and installed a Keihan exhaust and they're like you say - excellent quality and fit exactly as stock. They also sounded about the same as stock, perhaps just slightly louder.

I've known people who built their own mufflers (silencers to some of you) and they even looked factory. Did you have the sheet metal bent into a cone or did you do that yourself? If I built my own, I'd maybe copy the glass-pack design using stainless wool instead. With the cost of Staintunes, Keihans and even Armours - building my own is tempting. I've never welded stainless, but a mig can do that. And I want to know how.

In case anyone is in the mood for selling or knows a source for the stock muffler’s on a Lemans I. Years ago I sold the ones on my CX and of course I’m kicking myself for getting rid of them now that I need a pair.

:thumb: Keihans: Outstanding quality, excellent value for money.

Wow, thanks for that link, Charlie, I LIKE that price.....what's the exchange rate now?

230 GBP = 297.53 USD
You have to inquire about shipping costs.

Would those silencers bolt up to the Bub headers?

Would those silencers bolt up to the Bub headers?
They should unless the BUB headers are a different diameter than stock headers.
-
I’ll check

No, I subbied 'em out, my eyes don't weld these days , although Iv'e rolled up a few megaphones in the past.
Here is a video of the man who made them, in action,,

Bubs are loud. Repacked they'll be less so, but they're loud.
Been trying to sell a stock LeMans system for almost a year if you're interest

Does the lemans system bolt right up?
Oil changes possible without disassembly?

IIRC, there are a few fit issues: If your T3 has footboards and the big sidestand, the left headpipe will hit the sidestand bracket. The curve of the 'pipes is different "touring" models vs. "sport" models - sports are more swept back. The crossover width may be narrower. Since it's the same "H" pipe configuration as the original T3, there would be no difference in clearance for oil changes. The mufflers have more of an upsweep, so different peg brackets/muffler mounts would be needed. They would also interfere with the stock T3 saddlebag mounts.

I'm interested Furbo. Sending a PM...

Thanks guys, the lemans pipes would be cool but I’ve spent enough time improvising....

Kind of an old thread but still worth continuing the conversation.
I just last month took advantage of the exchange rate and bought these. The fitment is a little wonky and they're maybe a little too quiet. Their email is funny too- I kept getting undeliverable messages so had to bite the bullet and pay $50 for a long distance call.
Pictured below are the Armours (3), then stock, then Bub's.
If I could get the Bub's apart I'd repack the baffles. I still think stock mufflers look best but all I hear is valve clatter while riding.

Recently at a coffee shop gathering when a person commented on what nice looking and sounding Bubs I had on the T-3. For cheap Guzzi content they are not Bubs but $80 (may be more now) Emigos. Have another new pair in waiting that I paid $30 at an auction.

Every time I see a picture of your T-3 I love it more John.

I still need to sort a solution for the levers after putting Lafranconis on the LeMans. Could a good metal shop heat these enough to bend out enough to clear? They'd have to be able to bend the toe piece back straight after widening the reach on the lever.

I'm sure it could be done but the chrome will be destroyed.

Does everyone run rear sets to solve the problem? Any other ideas?
