That is a very common mode of transport in Asia , nothing unusual happening there .

Dunno , we witnessed Honda step thru models carrying entire families in SE Asia , never saw a crash . They have finely honed skills we don't possess.

Once again , they have skills we don't possess . Then again , the idea of hurtling along at 80 MPH on a freeway clogged with other vehicles going 80 MPH would frighten that guy . All a matter of what feels normal .

Interesting comment . I've lost a couple of friends in motorbike accidents , and have another friend who is paralyzed from one . All happened right here in Oklahoma . The folks in that picture live in a different world than we do , applying our standards to them seems a bit distasteful . Guessing the family never wanted to be a youtube sensation , they are simply going about their daily life .

Ah not quite.
My lasting memories of a bus trip in Malaysia in the early 1980s was several pairs of dead thongs(flip flops to the nth americans) in pools of blood at various places along the side of the road.
So super men they arent.
But I have yet to see a western motorcyclist put 27 chicken cages with chickens on the back of a scooter, so there is that level of skill.

How do you know they were from motorbike accidents , or that there was more than one person on board ?
No , they aren't supermen or women , they just live a different life . Heck , how many fatalities every year at the IOM ? The Northwest 200 ?

Thats exactly right Dusty. In some of those third world countries people are considered very rich if they own a tractor for family transportation, especially if it has old school flat fenders for the family to ride on, like a Mahendra. Most of them are lucky to have a bicycle. Yes it’s a different culture and they are well schooled in transporting their kids in unusual ways for our taste. I’m sure their children’s well being is a high priority also for them and they do not place their kids in unnecessary danger no more than we in America do. In fact running down an interstate at 80mph is probably something they wouldn’t even consider.

One trip to Okinawa, South Korea or the Philippines and you'd know this is Basic Riding 101 stuff. They rarely exceed 20 MPH when toting around their families. That said, I couldn't do it. But, they couldn't ride the way we ride either. We all have our comfort zones. Mine just happens to be around 80 MPH :evil:

I’m reminded of a De Havilland DH 84 (Tiger Moth) I flew once..
The bike is probably faster, but was good fun !

This thread makes me sad I have a pile of $600-700 helmets in my garage that timed out for use. Not to mention helmets my kid wore. Sure, they may not be perfect anymore, but are a damn site better than nothing. Too bad there is not a way to collect them and get them to families like in the photo.
When I look at that picture I see a loving dad who is working hard to provide his family the best transportation he can. That wing protects them from rain. The transportation may well mean the difference between things like school or no school for those kids.

Given the heat and humidity in much of Asia , a more open helmet might be more appropriate , but I like your idea Rob .
