Hey you local guys , US 69 is closed in Pryor due to flooding , don't ever remember that happening . Large boulders have washed onto the road around Leonard , Tulsa is going under water , not a drop of rain here yet . Cedar Vale is dealing with a LOT of water .

Don't want to end up in KS w/o a boat. The house pretty much getting a moat around it. My main sump pump is running every 20 seconds. Raining moderate at this time. Have had close to five inches since noon yesterday.

According to the Oklahoma Mesonet weather site, we've had 6" in Edmond in the last 24 hours. And it's still raining pretty heavy now and for a couple more hours. Then sunny and windy this afternoon. Boy am I ready for a break from the rain. Next 5 days show chances of thunderstorms everyday. Monsoon season for sure.
The ride into work this morning was OK except for the rain running down inside the collar of the rain jacket a bit. Fortunately I keep a clean shirt in my desk for such situations. It was coming down pretty hard.

I'd quit complaining about our midwest wx, but we still can't get into the fields to plant and time is running out for corn. Haven't flown all year. (!) We've only been able to mow some of the runway so far.

Yep. We've been dealing with high winds and torrential rains since around 1 PM, yesterday. The Neosho River goes right by town, and it was already swollen to it's banks after it flooded, a couple of weeks ago, so the north end of town is going underwater. Also, I no longer have a drivewway. Drainage ditch behind my property is overflowing, turning it into a river. :undecided:

Our power was out from 10:30 to 2:00AM. Big wind and rain. The grandstand @ Lucas oil speedway in Wheatland got totally destroyed. 11 injuries also. More on the way today. You Okies can keep your weather. We've had enough.

Talihina OK is in the path of a radar indicated tornado , hope the park survives .
As is normally the case , the worst of the storms split around Muskogee , although we are flooding at the moment . Water rescues happening all around Eastern and Central OK , Tulsa schools are closed as are many local districts . Conditions are setting up for us to have another year of 70" plus rainfall .

"some of the most dramatic arcus formations mark the gust fronts of derecho-producing convective systems" -- wikipedia/arcus clouds.
One of those derechos was blowing train cars off the tracks when I went down to your region for a tour.

In Oklahoma the sound of storm sirens is the signal for everyone to go outside and look for the tornado . Sirens sometimes lead to neighborhood block parties :shocked: :laugh:

That's what it still looked like, here, with all of the creeks emptying into it and the floodgates upriver at John Redmond Reservoire being wide open, so we've already got a lot of flooding from it.

It was a rainy evening here. Glad the severe stuff went around us. It cooled off before the storms could build here. I see it was 45 this am in Amarillo (250 miles west of here). I have friends in Colorado that sent me photos of hummingbirds flying while it's snowing.
My tomatoes just look like heck. One nice fruit was knocked off and leaves frayed.
Heading down Rt 66 to Luther with the ride to dinner group tonight. I hope the road isn't flooded. I discovered that the Luther Police Chief is a Ducati rider. Luther was a notorious speed trap.

Did anyone see the vids of the houses on the Cimarron River? That's just north of me, normally it's a huge ditch with a trickle of water. I ride up there pretty often for the twisty road that follow the river. Cimarron City is just west of Guthrie (frontier Capital)

Two barges anchored in the Mcclellan-Kerr navigation channel have broken loose and are headed for the Lock and Dam at Webber Falls OK at a high rate of speed . Webber Falls , Gore , and downstream are being evacuated . Wholey Schmidt , 30 years living here , this type of thing hasn't happened in that time .
The Arkansas River is running at record levels , it's freaky looking .

I-40 at Webbers Falls Oklahoma is closed.
US-64 at Webbers Falls Oklahoma is closed.
This will impact thousands of trucks and autos tonight. There is no way to cross The Arkansas River in this area, with both bridges closed.
Corps of Engineers is expecting a real bad deal. They think the lock & dam may fail when impacted by the barges, and both bridges are just downriver from the dam.
Long detour south on US-59, OK-9, and OK-2 around Robert S. Kerr Reservoir.
What a mess.

I read they closed the I-40 bridge across the river. I remember when a barge took it out a few years ago when several drivers were killed.
Of course if the dam is taken out there could be several communities wiped out before it even gets to the bridge.

Have some friends in Webber Falls and Gore , they have evacuated . The Corp is predicting record flooding , even if the dam at Webber holds . This is a mess . Tornadoes are scary , but water does more damage . The Arkansas has entire trees floating downstream that may cause more damage than the barges . People here are worried the power plant is in danger of flooding , which is doubtful , but the marina at Ft Gibson is a mess .

Sounds like the barges are aground on a rock jetty and crews have been able to secure them.
Lots of damage and several deaths in Missouri overnight. Jefferson City got hit pretty hard.

The barges may not be secured yet , but they look to be stopped . When they broke loose from the port here , OHP stopped traffic on HW 62 until the barges cleared the bridges , then did the same thing at I 40 .
Once again , I am in no danger , although the calls and messages are appreciated , seems like the only time we make the national news is when we are having a disaster :laugh:

Loaded with fertilizer , this likely isn't over yet . The barge channel is normally maybe 15 feet deep and requires regular dredging , freaky to see those barges disappear under water .

About half of the roads up there are underwater , last picture I saw showed Spavinaw flooded out . I would find a different route , this is serious Darren , even some of the bridges are closed .

It is surprising that when they were beached, the couldn't somehow attach them with some heavy duty steel cables to the shore...but I don't know where they landed initially or if that were feasible, or perhaps drop a pilot on them from a helicopter and start up the engines to run against the current? Looks like they were attached to each other as well as they floated downstream...
I'm no barge expert, but so many questions...maybe someone has answers...or insight.

To answer the last part , these are simply shipping containers , no engines , no steering mechanism , just dumb boxes .
These barges are anchored by cables with loops on the end that are placed over posts anchored in concrete . Apparently they floated up so high the loops were pulled over the top of the posts .We are in uncharted waters here (pun intended) , no one really believed the river could get this high .
Lastly , they hit the damn really hard , like whammo kabam , there is some visible damage to the damn , except now it is being obscured by water flowing over the barges .

I think I heard on the news that they secured the barges to a tree when it was beached but they finally pulled the tree down.

Spending this weekend over here, in SW Mo now. Heading to Hot Springs today. Trying to figure something out for next weekend. Maybe truck the Griso over there Friday night or Saturday morning. Mostly depends on work and how much yard reconstruction I need to do.

Because ...well , they were loaded with fertilizer , and the story here is that it was ammonium nitrate . Not verified yet , the details are still sketchy, but even the fear of what might happen caused the authorities to be cautious .
We still haven't seen the worst , the Arkansas in Muskogee is expected to crest at 45' above flood stage around midnight , Keystone lake is still rising, down to about 9' of head space , Ft Gibson lake is also still rising , Ft Gibson is sans power , although they are working on a temporary fix in the form of a portable sub station being imported from Arkansas . Ft Smith will see record flooding , as will every low lying area down river . I am staying home out of the way until someone calls for help in the form of my truck and trailer .
What a mess .

Lots of high water running under bridges in NE Oklahoma. Extreme SW Missouri and Eastern Arkansas down to Hot Springs didn’t look bad at all. Spending the night here in Hot Springs then heading back to central Oklahoma tomorrow. Will get to see some of the Arkansas river run off first hand.
We did have to stop on a bridge yesterday with water hitting the underside. You could feel it moving around from the water pressure. Kind of an eerie feeling.

It did not matter that White Star had other assets. And this result obtained even though the ship was English, had never been to the United States, and sank on the high seas.

A barge on the river was engaged in a pile driving operation and unfortunately drove a piling so deep into the river bed that it penetrated into the Chicago tunnel system that lies party under the river. Millions of gallons of water went into that hole, causing a massive flood of downtown Chicago, the basements of multiple skyscrapers, and billions in damages. The barge owner invoked federal admiralty jurisdiction, and was able to limit its liability to the value of the crappy old barge.

I shall have to study this a bit more...on the surface, it defies logic that a shipowner or barge owner is not responsible for proactively planning for a situation like this...tethering it and assuming it doesn't float away doesn't sound like a terribly sound "insurance policy" in the event of rising waters, but perhaps there was no other real physical option...and scuttling it while tethered didn't make sense either.
Funny how when it comes to big losses, there seems to be some paper protection when in reality the practical side of what happened doesn't seem to come into play.

I shall have to study this a bit more...on the surface, it defies logic that a shipowner or barge owner is not responsible for proactively planning for a situation like this...tethering it and assuming it doesn't float away doesn't sound like a terribly sound "insurance policy" in the event of rising waters, but perhaps there was no other real physical option...and scuttling it while tethered didn't make sense either.
Funny how when it comes to big losses, there seems to be some paper protection when in reality the practical side of what happened doesn't seem to come into play.

Something that is "act of God" + limited liability for industry? It sounds about right to me.
I am sure that all the barges and mooring were inspected by the powers that be. The insurance companies will settle, the difference to the dam will be made up by the taxpayers, anyone else might pray for a FEMA loan or perhaps a town benefit? Maybe someone had flood insurance?

I’m heading to Muskogee once the flood waters recede. I’m obsessed with submarines.
FYI, a batfish looks like a battered fried shrimp.

the local dinner riders' club does an annual trip to Muskogee (from OKC). The ride leader is an ex-submariner and likes to lead a tour. Then they eat at Charlie's Chicken. Usually do this in Sept-Oct.
My deal, once I've seen a submarine, BTDT. But I like to ride. I'll be heading through Muskogee for the Ozark trip next week (maybe Dusty can recommend eats that ain't Charlies?).

The Mississippi River at Dubuque, IA, has been above flood stage for a month and a half. It was finally getting down to normal levels, and now more monsoon rains. It will probably be close to July before it gets back to normal.

Just in time for the Wisconsin rally at Lake Joy!! That's a nice crossing into the drift-less region coming from Dubuque...now if I can find the time to get up there again this year for the rally would be great.

Just the same, Nora's dad, Fritz (RIP) was a submariner, and just last year said he'd do it again in a heartbeat. Seemed sane enough to me. :grin:
Of course, some people can't imagine flying. <shrug> Fritz was a pilot, too.

More rain , all of it draining into the Arkansas , Ft Gibson is an Island at the moment . There is a Guzzi rider in Ft Gibson , although none of you know him . He has been a friend for some 30 years , we used to travel all over the country together . This is going to be a multi-day event , Keystone is running wide open , and will be until at least Wednesday , and the other 2 rivers that meet at Muskogee are both way above flood stage .

The storm passed over northern BA. 5 miles away. Some rotation. It's out over Spavinaw and Lake Eucha right now. Headed for Mo/ Arkansas. Look out Luap, Wes, and you other Ozark boys.....

El Reno got hit pretty hard. There are few fatalities in a mobile home park. There was that no one was killed in the motel despite it being leveled. OKC had trees and roofs taken. These tornadoes were small and could form and dissipate within seconds. So there was no real warning. For example, the storms in El Reno were about 40 miles from OKC, rather than tracking those funnels, new ones formed in OKC about 15 minutes later.

We got another 1-1/4" of rain last night in a couple hours of over night storms. Lots of little limbs on the ground and more dirt washed out and down the creek. And more storms predicted in the next 7 days.
Brother-in-law called middle of last night cause weather chasers were reporting a spin up tornado about a mile from our house. We had turned the cell phone alert off because we were getting no sleep the last couple of weeks since they were going off for flooding and storms several times every night. Might need to turn the alerts back on and just endure it for the next few weeks.

yeah Apple Valley had another scare, that's just down the road from you. I guess because of the pop up nature of these storms, there really wasn't any warning.

Some experts are saying this is do to the almost complete lack of wind at the moment , allowing the water to settle down . No idea , guess it makes sense . At the moment there isn't much rain falling North of us , although there is a good chance that will change . Keystone is still rising , seems likely we won't see much change for several days .

Just way he'd a drone video of the Bat Fish and noticed the covering over the Oklahoma mast was under water up to the roof. Makes me wander if it was moved out before the flood or is under water again. Significant piece of history there. :cry:

This is the worst flooding since the dam system was built .
Just had a conversation with two *bond recovery* guys who live in Locust Grove OK , they said it is bad all of the way from Muskogee to the Kansas border .
Oh , no they weren't coming for me :laugh: Really a couple of funny guys , although tangling with them would be a mistake :shocked:

The dam at John Redmond Reservoire in SEK has been running wide open for three weeks, and levels have barely dropped. That, combined with all of the additional rain, has cause flooding all over the place, around here, from the Neosho River. There were no northern or eastern routes out of Chanute that weren't underwater, yesterday.

You prefer flooding to rain? Conditions there look dire, sounds like you'd have to skirt pretty far south and then come back up north...what's the weather forecast on the tail end of the trip too...going to be riding back in a squall?
I hate to see you guys in this situation, it's beginning to look too similar to Hurricane Harvey from 2 years ago here in Houston...

Won't be a problem, up in The Hills. I'd stay out of The Arkansas River Valley, though. The AR-109 bridge at Morrison Bluff, south of Clarksville, will be at risk of being closed. The AR-23 bridge at Ozark will probably still be closed.
Harrison is 1100 feet elevation, and the fun roads go up to 2200 feet. Clarksville, along The Arkansas River, is at about 370 feet elevation and Russellville is at about 350, so you can see that all of the good riding will be above the flooding along The Arkansas River.
If all your riding is north of The Arkansas River, you won't even know that all the flooding is going on.

The US-62 bridge is closed at Muskogee. I wouldn't go that way.
Pretty much every bridge between Coweta and Fort Smith is closed.
You're going to be limited to these crossings of The Arkansas:
- I-44 and I-244 in Tulsa,
- I-40 at Webbers Falls,
- US-59 south of Sallisaw.
You could run I-40 from Edmond to Sallisaw, then grab US-59 north to Stilwell or Westville, then turn right into Arkansas.

I see on the news that a levee has given way near Little Rock and they say two more are in danger. Man this is getting worse rather than better. I'm thinking of all those who are having to deal with all this.

What a mess, weather wise, in the Mid West and South West. And here we are in NE Ohio complaining that our yards are saturated and that the grass is growing too fast! I hope for all of you who are experiencing being 'under water' that you're able to dry out and recover, and soon. I cannot believe some of the pix I've seen of towns I've ridden through over the past 15 - 20 years.

The barges are both laying underw, there ater against the Webbers Fall lock and dam . Waiting on the water to recede . Funny thing is a plan costing 7.4 million dollars to sink a barge in the Mississippi river to divert flood water into an alternate channel , which seems silly , us Okies can show them how to do it for almost nothing :shocked: :laugh:

Yep , they are turned sideways against the dam , underwater .
We would probably just cut a large hole with a torch , river barges aren't made from really thick metal , think motorcycle fuel tank .

US Army Corps of Engineers. It's not an "Okie" or and "Arky" thing. The feds handle transportation on The Rivers. Not the locals.
